In MTV:VI your generals are succeeded by another general with the exact same stats and vices. Thats good, cause I dont want my generals to become worse. The annoying thing is that they change name and I find it hard to keep track of the names of my best generals. It would be a lot easier to keep track of them if they wouldnt change names.
Is there a way to prevent them from doing so?

Only a theory here since I never cared to check but... They may be retaining the family names if you marry the princesses to them.
Still, I need confirmation/correction.

This isn't exactly what you want, but should help. If you know this already, excuse me.
Open the list of army commanders. Click on the word valor. The quick search and sort will put the high-valor generals at the top. Click a name on that line, and it will take you right to him.

I use a simple system for keeping track of generals.
>= 4 is a general.
