why would my ALLY launch a CRUSADE on me?

this happened to me the other day. i have been ALLIED with the French for MANY TURNS, and all of a sudden i get a message that the French have launched a crusade against me

wtf? i thought the dumb AI knew that the French was my ALLY so therefore why would it do that?

if your allies are gonna attack you then WHY EVEN HAVE ALLIES?

this game is seeming more totally stupid the more i play it

well, they backstab whenever you show weakness and this is a great flaw in the diplomacy system.

allies are for relieving sieges for and occasionally helping you out in battles. bribing into the steppes, I was actually sieged by rebels and once my allies actually relieved the siege and also have them taking provinces for me in allied invasions before.

they can be beneficial and helping them raises influence for better heirs.

kill the pope if he start getting ideas tho. then no more crusades

yep, sitting with a huge stack in neighboring province and periodically invading him keeps him honest.

just don't kill him but just siege him until the very last moment so he sits in a measly drafty fort in papal states eating cold gruel with like 3 illiterate UM.

You must always be wary of not just your opponents but also your allies it can never be gauranteed that they will stand strong beside you indefinately.
