this varies greatly, sometimes just getting ready to start a battle can take a long time in itself. the battles themselves can go from anywhere from 10 minutes to over half an hour if the teams are equally matched. leaving in the middle of the battle is certainly possible, but it wont make you any friends, and if you do it too often, you will start to get a bit of a reputation.
