Thread: Shogun: Tutorial

I've been playing S:TW for a while now, and just today, I remembered something that bugged me when I first started out. The tutorial-well, one part or it, anyway. The archer tutorial, where you have to defeat some Yari Samurai with a unit of Samurai Archers. I remember trying to beat that little mission ten times and failing every time. In the end I gave up, fearing the game would be too hard for me, but then I ploughed on anyway. I can beat the game fairly well now (enough to become Shoun on Normal, at least :P) and I still can't do that tutorial mission.

Am I being stupid and missing something here, or is it just very hard? I'd like to know, because perhaps there is some kind of tactic really good for archers unknown to me.

What I normally try is putting them two ranks deep on a hill and set them to skirmsih backward. Once I'm out of arrows and have led the Yari Samurai on a merry trek around the map I gather up in a forest to try and attack them hand-to-hand in there, and I still lose.

That tutorial was always a bit unpredictable for me too, shogun's tutorials were rather hard. I eventually found the best tactic for a reliable (read: win 8 times out of every 10) victory was to deploy into 2 lines in the same spot you start on, shoot as much as possible without moving, then charge into melee when they get reasonably close. Skirmishing didn't help, it resulted in my archers never gaining much of a lead so they just tired themselves out. I found you needed to kill about 4 yari samurai before melee started to win, assuming you have the height and fatigue advantage.

    Yeah, that was a toughie.

I set up two ranks deep, on hold formation. You want to retreat your men yourself, earler than the AI would, and uphill, rather than just away from the Yaris. Then keep firing till they're right in front of you, after the point where the AI would have retreated. Then charge into melee.

Doesn't always work, but a 50/50 chance of beating them.

Thanks guys-I tried it out just now and actually won. Hurrah There's a tutorial thingy after it too, which I didn't know. I'll give that a go and see how I fare on that.

It's kind of funny that I'm beating the tutorial mode after already being Shogun of Japan three times.
