Assigning #'s to units in battle

I remember that there's supposed to be a way to assign a number to each unit in battle (or at least #'s 1 to 9) so that you don't have to point and click on the unit or its icon at the bottom of the screem (which is what I've always done).

Now, I'm trying to play through battles without Pause, so speed of command and control is even more important

I tried the command from the book that comes with the game (I think ctrl+space+#) but it didn't work.

Can someone clue me in to exactly how this is done?

control+shift+number to assign, control+number to recall.
