Now that I think of it, American teachers didn't like their pupils to do something else than the exact subjects they were teaching, and those they were planning to teach.

Never noticed that until now... I have always preferred the Dutch schools anyways. Well, except the period where I was sort of a pariah in 6th grade of Dutch school... it was the school where I had been quite happy with when I was 5 and 6... but then they puked me out like a hairball. Painful to think back to, but it's much, much better now.
