    Question

So I'm playing as the English and have conquered 60% of the map. I'm not interested in any half-victory, so I choose to continue. I control all of england, all of Scandinavia, western Europe (including the Iberian peninsula), and most of Central Europe as well as Northern Russia. So I decide to push into N. Africa and send mad armies into the mid-east to capture some of the high-income territories. At this time The Golden Horde appears, not unexpected. But within 2 turns, the Hungarians reappear in Hungary (which I hold), the Almohads reappear in Portugal (which I hold) and virtually every province in Britain and modern-day France revolts, and all in one turn. What the heck? I had no indications, all of the territories had garrisons of at least 100 men, and these were areas I had owned for over 100 years. Is this standard, or did I get waylaid by massive bad luck, or underplanning? I am playing with the current patch and the VI add-on.

    Thanks for any help.

This is the little twist CA threw in to keep you on your toes. It'd be too easy if this didn't happen.

There are some good archived threads on preventing revolutions. One general tip is that 100% loyalty isn't good enough - you want closer to 200% so that when some huge loyalty-knocking event occurs the reduced loyalty values are still above 100%.

having at least 200 troops and political agents in each region helps too,as Malibu said : you want to aim at 200% loyalty. Also keep extra garrisons in troublesome provinces, there is a tread on this board which ones they are. The most troublesome provinces are Portugal and Lithuania - I don tremember the other ones.

I've achieved total victory without mass rebellions . Use lots of spies(3-4 in every province) & most importantly don't use your king in offensive battles. Keep him in a province with a port & have a minimum of 2 ships in every sea zone. Also make sure you build happiness buildings in every province
watch tower, militia buildings, churhcs/mosques, brothels, reliqueries/ribat/monasteries.

    Welcome to the Org, Croda

Massive drops in loyalty in lots of your provinces are hardcoded into the game to make it harder for you when you become a superpower. The other problem you get is that all the AI factions become hostile towards you.

One or two tips to help you avoid getting the Longest Year:

Check province loyalty every turn. Use the shift key to see if any provinces have slipped from green (100% loyal or above) to yellow or red. Sometimes merely reducing the tax rate will head off a rebellion.

If you build plenty of ports and ships, you can easily shuffle troops across the map to act as peacekeepers in potentially rebellious provinces.

Welcome to the Org Croda. Here is a previous post of mine on the subject. There were also some good ideas put forth by others in the same thread, so I have included a link at the bottom. Hope this helps:

There have been some excellent posts on both topics, in particular one by ichi. Below is my basic strategy for accomplishing both of these goals. In case it makes a difference to anyone, I typically play on “hard” difficulty setting.

    1) I always use auto-tax, with the following change: set the default loyalty to 180% rather than 120%
    2) I maintain a garrison in every province consisting of the following:
    · 1 x 100 man spear unit
    · 1x 60 man spear/sword unit
    · 1 x 60 man missile unit
    · 1 x 20 man knight unit
    3) I always make my provincial governor one of the above-mentioned units
    4) I make sure the general I choose as governor has at least 4 acumen and at least 3 dread
    5) I keep the following strategic agents in every province:
    · 1 x Assassin
    · 2 x Spy
    · 1 x Religious agent (i.e. Bishop, Cardinal, Imam, etc…)
    6) Make sure every province has the following buildings, minimum:
    · Town watch
    · Church/Mosque
    · Tavern
    · Brothel
    · 80% farm upgrade
    · Highest Merchant upgrade possible
    · Port
    · Any Mines available
    · Border Forts

The result of this system is that any provinces you have held for at least 3 years will always be auto-taxed at the “very high” level, without ever having loyalty drop below 180%. This maximizes revenue and stability. I have NEVER had a revolt or rebellion using this system, and usually have ample supplies of cash lying around, once I hit the High period.

Another Pennsylvanian Welcome to the Org Croda. The others have pointed out some good information. Basically you can't just focus on building a mighty military. Your people must be happy too. What makes people happy? Feeling safe (town watch, border forts), wealth (ports, merchants, mines, farms), and having their spiritual needs met (churches, mosques) are some of the biggies.

Yeah, I had the same problem too, but actually I don't think factions reemerge unless provinces are below 100% loyalty--then they reemerge 100% of the time tho

BTW nice pun in the title.

As you get bigger you need to garrison heavily. Heres a simple rule for garrisoning for every 10 percent of Europe you own each province needs a minimum of 50 men. So when you hit 60 percent you need to garrison at least 350 men in each territory still small and still at risk of rebellion but more likely a lot less rebellions acrross your empire
