I'm playing my first GA game as the HRE in Early (Easy level - hey, I said it was my first one). At first the GA goals are just crusades, homelands and conquest, then later Holy Roman Empire shows up as a goal, with 2 points for conquering Milan and Tuscany and one each for Rome and Naples (or some such). The points are tallied in 1150 and two other later years ... So I took Milan (and not yet the other three), it gave me the two points for it in 1150 but then the goal disappeared from the list. I assumed you got points for whatever you had in each of the three years it said points would be tallied. Or do you have to conquer all four by 1150 to have the chance to fulfill that goal?

    thanks ...

As you suspected, there's a time limit on attaining many of the goals.

Thanks .. It was just confusing because it had three different years you could get points.

    thanks.

around 50-25 years before the next time you can score points the goal will reapear, so if you take rome now you will get the points the next two times

yep. the list updates from time to time and you have to be aware of it.

I often have to scramble to discover a goal two or three years before it has to be satisfied but this adds fun to the game.

also, the HRE one is guaranteed to get you excommed as you must war upon the popesta but is interesting and worthwhile.

The goals are there and you can work to acheive them. They dissapear from the list until a few decades before the next time they are counted.

This is probably to prevent the lists from getting cluttered up.

    Rufus,
Keep a scrap note where you write down all your GA-goals and their requirements. This way you won´t miss any. Good luck

The best way to deal with the pope is to invade all his lands and eliminate the papal faction, then move a lot of units into rome and leave a very small garison in the papal states. When the pope comes back (He tries that every 5-10 years) he will probably come back in the papal states. Then you retreat and voila, no excomm, no problems and no more invasions of papal armies trynig to return. Sometimes the pope will also try to take rome, but if oyu defeat him there right away you'll still have a ceasfire with him

thanks ... I think I'll try the Crusades before going after the Pope, since you can't crusade without him. That's assuming the timing works out with the GA goals.

To take the RPG aspect a bit further, I sort of have this storyline that the German leader goes off on crusade, the Pope having promised him the title of HRE if he conquers the four crusade targets. After I finish the crusades, the Pope reneges, and I say, OK, you're outta here, I'll set up my own pope. :)

By the way, is there a comprehensive list of all GA goals for all factions available somewhere? I looked at http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/faq.shtml and didn't see one. On the one hand it would be a spoiler, on the other it would be nice to know before starting a GA campaign whether the faction has any cool goals other than crusades, homelands and conquest.

take Rome and kill enough of them to siege the pope in papal states and move out in last year.

this way, he wouldn't be at war with you and being starved in a siege means no military to threaten you and papal states is very poor so he can't afford new units.

I suggest hitting him early and excomm while your first king as you don't have a chapter house and markers all set up.

once your first king dies, let the crusades begin

note: building markers is doable while excommed and I like having a few markers to keep up constant pressure anyhow and often don't start crusading until first king dies anyhow.
