but there's got to be a better way of doing this. i did part of this in paint shop pro and part in photoshop. i need a tool that can color, or perhaps re-color would be a better choice of words, over an area and have each of the pixels change in hue or saturation or both, or be set to a specific range. psp shld do this, but i'm not finding the tool yet, and i've very little experience yet with photoshop and my 30 day trial is about to run out :(

an easy way to do it is to copy the whole image above itself, then you can can alter the photo beneath as much as you want. then simply erase from the top layer, revealing the pertinent color from the below layer.
this home dye job look took me 10 min, and was easier than selecting and worying about all the other colors in the pic. more time spent on careful erasing would have yielded less original hair color in the final image.
