Thread: Why does Total War draw such a global fanbase?

I've been exposed to the online following of several major games over the years, but Total War seems to draw a particularly international crowd. And also a lot of British folk. :)

Why such a global crowd? Before I checked out Totalwar.org and these forums a few weeks ago, I have no idea that the games had such a following overseas. Frankly I had no idea they were popular outside my native USA. Is CA a British company perhaps?

    Insights appreciated.

Seems like a 'yes' to me. I find that games by European companies tend to get a lot more European exposure than North American companies get.

I think why MTW appeals to so many people is mainly because you can play as anybody in the Europe-Mediterraean area and because it is about a topic that a lot of people find interesting.

    Any messages for the lads?

also, the game is more historically accurate than most. esp. with medmod

the RTS battles and turn based campaign integrated like this is also very attractive.

Pople just want to have some power, to rule, to kill thousands of computer soldiers and hear a sound of triumph after a battle is won...
And TW games make it all possible, and they do it with style other games lack...

MTW is a good game with a very wide range of players and nations, but has a terrible tutorial, you have to play it for 3 months to get a decent grab of things. So people search for a forum to ask things..

    so true.

It's too deep for its own good as it's nearly impossible to document fully.

after I played the tutorial, I got owned in my first game in normal

OK, I didn't get owned but was painfully slow.

in 1160 as the Almos, I only had all of Iberia, southern France, and barely dented the HRE with 50k in the bank.

I also lost several important battles and progress was slow.

No ships as I didn't know and most of my time was microing taxes and shuffling my units province by province through north africa and up Iberia into Europe.

    quite painful really.

that's why I appreciate the game though and these forums.

probably draws a global fanbase because you can play as lots of different races and instead of giving those races creative names like most games do, Total War just calls them their boring normal names like the English and the French. therefore, many people probably feel like they're playing as their racial ancestors which is why they think Total War is a good game.

My, my, Lord EC Patrons reading this might find your words worthy of the Great Khans.

    Don't scare them

I agree that part of the atraction is due to Historical Accuracy, the Tactical Battles and the Real-World Battle calculator (ahead of their time) and, of course, Style and Perfectionism (remember Shogun's attention to detail?)...

Well, actually CA is owned by EA, and American company.
As to MTW itself, a great game with a lot of replay value. My wife complains about the number of games I buy, but recently (the last year or so), I haven't bought any new games as I have divided my time between MTW, BGII,Tropico,(I also play board games, sometimes against the computer, sometimes on-line)and work, when I can't avoid it. Wife, well that's been covered in another thread, MTW virtual widows

MTW has a fair amount of strategy and tactics depending on the time that you start and which faction you choose, but also depends on your strategy for total domination or GA.[B]

My good Lord Aymar, these are only the words of the Khan of the Nogai Horde, as the Great Khans would probably spice it up with some nasty comparisons and epithets.

It's a pity Vanya's not around, he'd probably choose the best words to express what a horde warrior feels about MTW...

It´s not so much about the game here...To me its more about helpful information here. I probably spend more time here than actually playing the game... Still it is just one fantastic game... but, but ,but sometimes I see red When 1 AI Kataphrakoi kills 300 of my men alone and survives.

Thanx to all and lets keep this game alive after RTW arrives.
....okay I should stop now....sorry I got carried away..

The total war games are the last bastion of intelligent, good strategy gaming. There is simply nothing else out there nowadays that isnt either hopelessly inept or completely dumbed down for the console market.

What happened to Vanya anyway? I clearly missed his departure.
