Couldn't find this in the guide/faqs, so here goes: As the HRE, I created a crusade marker in Lorraine with target Antioch. I have a complete line of ships from Frieseland to Antioch, but want to swing through Spain (traveling by sea) to soak up some of their troops (would do so for France but they're excommed). So first I go to Friesland (rather than dropping the marker on Antioch for the crusade to find its own way there), and the crusade takes some of my troops there. Then the only move I'm allowed to make with the crusade after that is straight to Antioch. Antioch is the only province highlighted and the only province the computer lets me drop the crusade marker on next.

So I guess the game requires you to go to the target province as soon as you arrive at a port connected to the target province?

I would've tried to go through France to Spain but assumed France would've denied access since they were already excommed anyway.

    Thanks

That's right. If I had it my way though, I'd dance all over europe sucking troops away from everybody (which is probably why it is like that)
"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."

that's why you may want to move away your fleet near friesland for a turn or two so you can pick an alternative route.

Or you can move your fleet in front of Antioch away, you then have a route to some other province close to Antioch and (maybe) via Iberia.
IIRC, you can take either the quickest land route or the quickest sea route, when they are the same length, you can go back and forth between the two...

that's quite true and nice if you can flip between high zeal provinces to suck up huge number of troops.

force your catholic neighbors to move away their stacks or face huge losses from crusade marker.

attack them afterwards and they should fold like a card house

The annoying thing is that the AI is free to meander its crusades willy-nilly back and forth through your territory seemingly forever if it wants to.
