I've pulled all the border info (which determines what battle terrain will look like) out of the campmap/startpos .txts, and found that, oddly, across the three game periods, the only difference is that 12 provinces' battles have Temperate climates in Early and High, but Lush climate in Late. (They are Carpathia, Finland, Lithuania, Livonia, Muscovy, Norway, Novgorod, Prussia, Scotland, Smolensk, Sweden, and Switzerland.) I know that deserts vs. the other climates have a big effect on unit performance, but what about Temp vs. Lush? I don't recall seeing any differences there.

    Happy plundering

I think its just the style of trees and stuff... Not really a difference in troops ability.

Arid and Desert are the ones to watch out for, those MAA get very tired even standing still

Seems like in Lush terrain there is a lower chance of finding a Fine Day (=more likely to be wet weather) than in Temp.

    Sounds reasonable, Ichi.

Come to think of it, I've never heard of a rain factor for provinces per se... and I just checked HIGH.TXT and couldn't find 'rain' or 'precip' anywhere in there. (Except for about 50 Lorraines, laugh.) So maybe the climate is the only thing that affects the chance? Hmm. There are three unidentified numbers in the Border Info though; no idea what they do. (They look suspiciously like bit settings, actually.)

Which makes me wonder... does anybody know just how rain works, then? What affects the chances, etc. I just had it raining hard in SICILY while I was defending with a ton of arrows, for all that's holy in the world

In the MTW directory is a folder called Battle, and within it is a file called Weather

This has variables that appear to determine conditions for a battle.

Huh... thanks, Ichi I never saw that before. Makes it pretty clear why it's almost always snowing on a winter map. I wonder what effect fog has, if any? I had always assumed that the fog one could see on the battlefield, was simply an indicator of how thick the rain was (like in real life, it blocks vision at a long distance)... maybe I'm wrong there.

I always thought that the fog affected your troops visabliity.. IE: how close the enemy has to be before they show up on the minimap. I know I have had whole armies show up close on my flank without even being on the minimap on some heavy snow battles.

Ah right, ok, that makes perfect sense. I've always turned on the option to roam freely over the map, which defeats fog I suppose, so I didn't even notice, heh.

Hey Ichi (or anybody else)... any idea how those numbers translate into e.g. percent chance of precipitation? Only the temperature ones seem straightforward (degrees Celsius, it must be). If I post up a nice .pdf of all boundaries, it'd be interesting to include something like, chance of precipitation.
Here's a little spreadsheet with the info from the file, so anybody else can take a look and take a guess.

Edit - Hey Ichi (and anybody else who cares), I had a little brainstorm and added in the percent of the ranges that are above zero (for rain/sand and fog) and below zero for temperature. While this might not be the way the game really uses it, I think it helps show a little better, the chances involved.

I just assumed they were probabilities,,, but to be honest I never was able to make any snese of it.

Greetings and welcome Iason. It must be foggy out, I didn't see you approach either.

Hey, here's an oddity from this file... did you know that, for WINTER battles, half the time it's BELOW FREEZING IN THE DESERT (and never hot), whereas for summer battles, three-fourths of the time it's hot.

Are armored units always equally hurt by extremes of cold and heat?

How about very light units... are they hurt by cold, but not heat?

And... how to tell if it's winter or summer (if you're not obviously in the snow)? Are all even years one, odd years the other, or... ???

    Anyone?

armored beasts are also tired out in deep snow or blizzards.

bad weather with extreme temperatures hurt armored units whereas light troops don't get any penalties IMHO.
