Its 1150ish, medmod, Italian expert. Im at war with Byz who have ships everywhere. EVERY turn I drag my fleets on to theirs, but the next turn...nothing happens????? This is driving me INSANE because it means my fresh troops take 4 years to get to Spain, rather than just one. I know what im doing, everything should work...but it doesnt

That means their ships have outrun yours: it has moved to a different sea region.

To catch small fleets you need to break your larger fleets into smaller pursuit groups. Naval battles are in two phases: pursuit and combat. Equal speed fleets have just a 50% chance of making contact (pursuit phase). The speed of a fleet is based upon the _slowest_ ship in that fleet, so a stack of 9 barques(speed-3) and 1 caravel(speed-1) has a speed of 1. Break your large stack into smaller groups, each having at least an equal chance of defeating the enemy ship if they can catch them.

For example: you have a stack of 12 caravels, your enemy has a stack of 2 caravels. I'd make 6 stacks of two ships, now you've got 6 fleets, each having a 50% chance of making contact, an average of 3 fleets will make contact, each having roughly even odds of winning. A single stack of 12 has only a 50% chance of making contact, but an overwhelming chance of winning.

try to use pure dromons in your case.

dromons are one of the fastest if not THE fastest ships in the game.

also, throw in some galleys in separate stacks for good measure.

also, if one of your fleets catch the enemy ship, the enemy ship has to fight all your fleets in that sea zone IIRC.

I can only build Galleys at the moment. I managed to take out about 12 of them and lose about 5. Its pretty dumb that I have to split all my stacks up to attack.

note: if you can build galleys, you can build dromons.

dromons cost more but are faster and have lower support so better in the long run.

the dromons are the wider deck, lighter colored ship.

ok, medmod does make a difference.

in vanilla, both basic ships types are avilable with shipwrights:galleys and dromons and I always pick dromons.
