Thread: My first major win!

I've had the game for like two months or so and it's been great but I'm only just now starting to play the battles instead of auto-calcing them. Anyway, I'm playing as the Danes and though it took me 30+ turns I've finally gotten the game going (took me forever to get enough ships for a trade route to France and England). I had a small army prepared (500 troops) and I invaded the nearest German province.

It turned out to be a bridge battle with me having 500 troops and they had around 900. I hadn't planned on having a bridge battle so I only had 1 archer compared to their 4. As soon as the battle started I positioned my spearmen to protect the bridge entrance, archers to attack anyone on the bridge, and swordsmen/woodsmen to attack. I noticed the AI had put its archers right in front of the bridge so I charged a unit of swordsmen across the bridge to attack the archers. Unfortunately, the AI was prepared and had a spearman ready to marche in front of the archers, effectively stopping my attack. However, their spearmen weren't in formation when my swords hit (and the spears were still in loose) so my swords began to rip through. I sent a spearman in because the swords had soon routed (after another 2 units of enemy spears arrived). Anyway, this is getting too long so to sum it up I sent several (defense +1) spears to hold them off and once I got them on the offensive attacked with archers and another unit of spears. My spears held them at bay for a while and once they began to slip I sent in both of my units of swords to easily rip them apart, making all their troops rout. I sent my general and an extra royal knight to attack all routing enemies and captured around 100. I killed the prisoners so the death toll for my enemy was around 700 while I lost only 100 troops.

Anyway, I was bored and thought I'd write this.

    good job.

the tactical side is quite enjoyable.

you are really missing out if you just autocalc.

it's best to be outnumbered and attack as your commander usually gets skilled attacker virtues.

I think I got lucky because my main attack forces were swordsmen and his were spears so I got a bonus (don't swords get a bonus over spears?). I doubt I would've won if my spearmen didn't have upgraded (both units of spearmen combined lost only 70 troops and they were nearly constantly fighting). the strange thing is I never saw the enemy general. I was trying to hunt him down after the bridge battle but I never saw him and he was never killed.

I think my main advantage was the AI's stupidity. He just kinda marched every unit he had at the bridge all at once so he kinda had 8 units scrunched up into one tiny little space (kinda funny seeing archers, horses, and spears fighting in no formation alongside each other). He had no formations so my spearmen got rank bonuses while his didn't.

You can always check to see if it will be a river battle BEFORE you invade, just check the province parchment and point the cursor at the neighbouring province. The game tells you the terrain for battle.

I'm beginning to. Now I'm really having a problem though. The tactical side of MTW is really fun however the graphics are severely lacking (plus no elephants tossing troops See my thread in the colloseum for details on that comment...). It seems that RTW has fixed that completely though.

Basically for the next 6 months or so I can buy 1 game and only 1 game. Seeing as there are two games that I'm really looking forward to this is a problem. I've been watching them both ever since they were announced and I just can't decide. It really stinks because both games look like they'll be great.

    A game called Evil Genius.

It's a humorous James Bond parody type game where you play as an Evil Genius trying to unleash your doomsday device. You can use your henchmen to do evil deeds (such as shrinking the eiffel tower) for notoriety. By doing this you will gain 'heat' from other countries and they'll begin to send agents to disable your base. This could include navy seals to a super agent.

The biggest thing about Evil Genius is the trap system. You can set huge complex traps up and the system should be pretty open-ended. For instance one trap could be an agent step on a pressure pad that activates a jet engine that transports hima across your base and then drops him in a fire pit.

There are many other cool (and funny) things about Evil Genius.

Hehe this was long. When I tell someone about a game I really tell them.
