This was all a big misunderstanding!

So get this:

I'm playing as the Takeda, allied with the Hojo, making war on the Uesugi.

I invade Echizen province.

The Hojo, allied to me, joins in on the battle ("...and should support you in this battle.")

Whenever this has happened, I've just autoresolved it. The ally helps then goes back to his turf.

But this time I decided to play the battle myself to see how such things play out. Well, the Hojos and I decimated the Uesugi to the last man. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, when I return to the strategy map, Hojo now owns the province, and my guys (Lord knows how) are holed up in the castle. Furthermore, the "alliance sheet" says I'm at war with the Hojo. I can't extricate my guys out of the castle or claim the province (which was my idea to invade) without fighting him, something for which I was not prepared.

Anybody know why this is happening, and/or how to avoid it?


Incidentally, there doesn't seem to be a similar way of ME helping my ally, is there?

These situations are a little confusing.

The best thing to do when an 'ally' appears in the battle is to line up behind him and let him engage the 'enemy'. Then open fire! Your guys will love it and the results will give them much hon for all those kills when the troops in the sandwich try to flee through your lines.

Got this once on a bridge map, maybe three or four men escaped.

After this decisive battle, you will no longer have any need for your former 'ally'.
