Any one know if there will be an Mp option? im surprised this was not revamped as a online effort like galaxies or everquest.

I was also a huge Pirates fan on the old C64, that and Bard's Tale. Sadly it looks like my PC won't be able to handle this new version (or RTW, for that matter).
So either I upgrade as soon as I have the money (yeah right) or wait for the likely XBox version of Pirates (since they made it for the Sega, they will probably do an XBox version, and I've heard rumors to that effect).

havent heard a word about mp and i see no mention on the official site either, but it would certainly make the game a better buy. maybe they'll add it in like they did civ iii, after the game is out.

Me too It was one of those Microprose titles that made you wonder how they ever got so much game into 64k.

I also had the Amiga version and then the PC version.

I liked the Amiga version best.

Sid knows what to do. He won't throw the baby out with the bath water like Impressions did with Lords of the Realm 3. A quick visit to the site revealed the same play mechanics and style as the original with some new wrinkles added. Which is exactly what fans want.

I'll be watchin' this one too matey. I spent many a night plunderin' the Carribean with me ol' C64 and the vilest bunch o' sea dogs ye'd ever want to meet.

the only problem with pirates was the fact that peoples mood changed rather randomly.
hmm we just got 200,000 gold pieces yet you 8 guys are still unhappy why the hell is that
    thanks, desmond

Pirates is easily my favorite all time computer game. I had a version for just about every computer I've ever had (and agree the Amiga version was the prettiest and most fun, although you could abuse the 'split fleet' option and leave most of your ships and crew out at sea for months getting tans off the gold while you visited ports and even divided the limited plunder with your smaller crew.

I'm greatly looking forward to this, but am even worried that Mr.Meier won't be able to duplicate what (to me, anyway) makes the original so much fun. The talk of more story and such worries me. To me, it was the open endedness of Pirates that I loved. Sure the people were always talking about your missing relatives, but you could always say 'Screw them Where were they for me? I'm off to annually capture the Treasure Fleet and marry the best looking daughter in the Carribean' and still live happily ever after.

At this point I'm willing to take Sid at his word. More story could mean just an expanded set of main quest adventures that we can take or leave. As long as the story is an optional adjunct to the game and not a compulsory set of missions we'll be OK.

I'm really curious about the land combat.

    thanks, dessa :)

i ran the thing and it actually worked. i'd forgotten just how slow those old c-64's were. i also kept failing the little treasure fleet question at the start, so i had to fence the captain to take over. lol. after 2 or 3 attempts and failures, i gave it up ;) but the emulator did work. cute :)

i'll try some of the others later.

    there you go.
the best thing about that site is the map.
that really helps out, the dates can be found on the first disc if you examine the disc and there is a program down the bottom with the name DATES.PRG i think.

ps press Ctrl F3 to speed it up from 100% to 500%.

umm also when you do reach the disk change, press F8 and then select disk two by highlighting it and pressing F4.
other wise the game won't work.

ive got a brilliant strategy for the game.
you can only take the treasure fleet or the silver train once in the game otherwise a trigger flicks and it is disabled til next year.

so you chase the treasure fleet through all the oceans, and you get a whole heap of galleons and avoid the annoying land battles.
though you do have to compete with silly winds and in anything but a barque you can't go into the eye of the wind and its hard to go against the wind at all.

    thanks,
    dessa
