    Talking

A thread in the Tavern (A case of double standards?) reminded me of this guide that seems to have been taken out of an old magazine.

Never could convince my wife to live by this guide.

*tries to dodge heavy and/or sharp objects thrown at him by female patrons*

    HOUSEKEEPING MONTHLY, MAY 13 1955

    The good wife’s guide

    - Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favourite dish) is part of the warm welcome indeed.

    - Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

    - Be a little joyous and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

    - Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

    - Gather up schoolbooks, papers, etc and then run a dustcloth over the tables.

    - Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you immense personal satisfaction.

    - Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimise all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.

    - Be happy to see him.

    - Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

    - Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first – remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

    - Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

    - Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

    - Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.

    - Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

    - Make him comfortable. Make him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

    - Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in low, soothing and pleasant voice.

    - Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgement or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always have to exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

    - A good wife always knows her place.

    Ah the good old days

Things like that make me a bit more optimistic about the future. Imagine if the lbierals of today would still have to fight the conservatives of today about things like that...
Its good women are not conmsidered a form of mobile and versatile furniture anymore. Lets hope we ll never again return to this way of thinkin and lets hop that in the places where men still do think that way this backwards mentality will change soon.

Gawain I bet, cannot keep in his excitement that there are other people that share his beliefs of women. I am sure he cannot even compose himself to post.

I suppose compared to some historical attitudes that is very enlightened...there's nothing about it being legal for dear husband thingy to hit you, kill you or sell you into slavery.

Actually there's a line or two missing (I've seen this before), I don't remember the wording but it was something about doing exactly what he wants in the bedroom because sex is entirely for him, not you. I also seem to remember a few more points on things like money, they basically boiled down to don't spend much and don't spend anything on yourself.

You don't want to see how a peeved frog could interpret that list to make your life uncomfortable, you really don't

What? You're not allowed to hit them anymore? What is this world coming to?

I just got an offer of three goats and a camel for my wife, would've been more but she can't cook

I would only throw hairpins at people trying to make me follow that list; actually I wouldn't do hairpins, I'd follow the list to the letter in my own special, heartwarming way

Actually, though I sometimes may sound as a macho chauvinist male pig (blame my extensive affection towards women for that, hehe ), no girl/woman I have ever been with has said that about me. I’ll go “leave that, I’ll do it” all the time, but I teach/have thought my female partners over the time how to do dozens of “man’s” stuff, from changing light bulbs and checking the oil in the car up to some smaller house work, so they wouldn’t simply stand helpless around if I wasn’t around. Also, I have and still cook frequently, and I never mind to do the dishes or grab the vacuum cleaner

And as for your addition concerning the bedroom, the woman is always the queen for me in that instance, and there would be some few voices to corroborate this statement for sure

But, after reading this manual once again, I believe that both partners should endeavor to behave according to them as much as possible and that then this would be a much enjoyable place then it is

I saw a full version of this list published in a newspaper a while back. It made me laugh. A lot.

With modification if both partners follow these ideas it could make a very nice place to live.
