    Hi all,

as Searchengines have established as Gatekeepers to the information/ sites on the web they are important for everyone using the web. They are powerfull as they possess the ability to direct the focus of attention and the traffic to specific sites. If we get no results from the search we don't know if such a site just doesn't exist or is simply not listed. Only a small percentage of the overall content is listed at all. This is due to the ever changing nature of the web and to the inabilities of the engines. However, sometimes sites are just excluded from the listing, if for example the content is thought to be illegal.

Which engine do you use and why?
Please comment on things as trust in the engine, objectivity and banning of sites from the listing.

    King Edward,

how do you determine that the results are accurate?
Do you cross-check with other engines?

i´ll use google for more mainstream everyday stuff....but if i´m looking for something very particular or work related i´ll use Altavista for 2 reasons:

1-it picks up on a lot of stuff that Google doesn´t
2-it has the possibility to turn all the filters OFF..why the hell would i want to restrict my search base?

Google, it does the business. Of course when it is bought out by fanatical Christian businessmen, I shall have to move on as it would probably block all the sites I want.

Hm, maybe I should've chosen the Main Hall for this.
    Voting is pretty low here.
    Results aren't unexpected, though.
Google really seems to have the monopoly.

I hope more votes are still to come.

Altavista was my most used web search engine for the first two or three years that I was on the internet.

Where is metacrawler in the poll?

I always use this search engine since it uses several search engines: Google · Yahoo · Ask Jeeves
    About · LookSmart · Teoma
    Overture · FindWhat
So it is (or should be) much better than only using Google.

Actually I forgot the meta- and gah- option.
    This being my first poll.
But you're right Duke, the meta-engines do some good job.
    As for Gah: GAH

    Google.

Nice, clean and simple. No aggravating adverts or side features complicating the seach engine.

Google because of the reasons many people have stated. It does what it says on the tin, and with no frills.

However, also use Teoma quite a lot because I like the way it groups its findings.
