I must be honest and say I do reload battles to get a better result. It isn't cheap because I am learning to play the game. When I mess up I can say to myself "What would have happened if I had used this tactic?" and then try it out. However I would never say "I managed to complete total domination by the year x", because I know I haven't been strictly honest. Anyway, now I think I am ready to do without the reload.
We all learn from experience. Unfortunately we don't all learn as much as we should.

I will occasionally reload if i do something totally stupid, by which i mean : stupid in a forgetful way, rather than stupid in a tactical way.

e.g. its 2 a.m. and i'm about to conduct a siege of a fortress, and forget to drag the stack containing my artillery onto the castle. Doh I dont see why i should be penalised just for being prematurely senile

I've never experienced any quicksave corruption, and i quicksave a LOT (my pc is very, very unstable and crashes about 50% of the time when loading battles). Having said that i have, of course, now jinxed myself and i will go home tonight to find all of my savefiles nicely randomised.

yep, I would sometimes do the same as daveybaby or other times forget to deploy my siege in range and just hit begin battle for find all my engines unabe to target the walls.

Yes, sometimes reloading is very tempting...

Last night I played a defensive battle with 2000 Almos against 2700 Egyptians (I was surprised to see that the Eggys didn't field a sea of peasants, only 5 or 6 units of them iirc, but mostly camels, nubian spears and led by hero general Nur al-din, 8 stars).
I had enough desert archers and AUM and berber camels, and managed to shoot up the 8 star killer saracen unit rather early (but not before he routed 75% of my first defense line though). I started to call up reinforcements and beat wave after wave that the Egyptians sent to me. Every now and then I replaced the tired and depleted units.
And then I did something stupid.

I withdrew four (exhausted) units of AUM, some berber camels and a few arrow-depleted desert archers, only to find out that I only had 4 reinforcements left 3 nubian spearmen and one (depleted) unit of mercenary FMAA. Were still left on the battlefield: 1 merc bulgarian brigands, 1 berber camels (15 men) and 1 ghulam cav (4 men, general).
    Oopsie. Mistake.
The last (?) wave of angry Egyptians consisted of 3 or 4 nubians, 3 or 4 camels, 1 muwahid foot and some peasants...
My men fought valiantly but in the end still routed...

I lost the battle killing 1800 and losing "only" 900 (which was still a bit too much to my personal taste).

I didn't want to reload this battle.
Plus: the Egyptians were so weakened that I could easily mop them up and ban them to Cyprus (their last province). I will do some good trading businesses with them the next years.

    good job lol

well, it's best to remember how many reinforcements you have and in what rough order so this type of thing doesn't happen.

You bet that next time that I'm fighting a huge battle, I'll take some pen and paper and write down the last 10 units or so.

    I felt so stupid...

I usually make a mental note of every 5 units or so.

BTW, isn't there a counter for reinforcements waiting?

you should know how many reinforcements are simply tiny fragments and definitely avoid using them.

(I feel even more stupid now) Yes there is.

There's a big green text at the left bottom of your battle screen telling you "You have X reinforcements left".

I guess I just didn't pay attention to this (nevertheless very clear) informative pop-up.
