Here's a grumble about a very useful undocumented feature I discovered by accident the other day - bishops can offer alliances in the same way as emissaries Nowhere does the manual tell you this, so for the last age I've been chasing around the map with emissaries every time some fool sinks a ship and cancels all my alliances. Since I spam bishops across the map as a matter of course, knowing the fact that they can offer alliances would've been darn useful... Grrr

Any other useful little tips 'n' tricks like this that folks know of?

Also, is it my imagination or does trade have a higher value with allies than with neutrals?

On page 40 of the manual it says

Thanks to Hawaiian Hobbit for the manpage I missed. I looked up "bishops" under strategic agents and saw no mention of it - didn't scan the whole manual .

Still, my embarrassment at least gets me to 100 posts .

Any successful proposal gives your agent more stars.
I usually use emissaries for alliance proposals because it's more useful to have a high-star emissary than a high-star bishop (emissaries can negotiate, bribe and arrange marriages, bishops can only negotiate)

bishops are less likely to get targeted by assasins and higher stars make them survive better.

they can still serve as spies and also convert some of the populace at the same time.

in general, i've noticed that all religious agents are seldom targeted by assassins. Well, ok, inquisitors are targeted more often, but the attempt usually fails. But bishops, cardinals, alims, imams, priests, are very rarely targeted by assassins.

exactly, so they make far better spies than emissaries.

I usually keep a bishop network throughout the map for spying purposes.

I have first level religious buildings everywhere for happiness boost and if I don't have anything to build, I crank out a few religious dudes.

soon, my spying network is complete and slowly converting the populace to my faith too.

that's my old trick, however, other peoples religious agents are not safe from my army of 5 star syrian assaisains...

    so true.

I have an assasin in every province and they take care of all enemy agents foolish enough to stray in.

funny how I don't ever get ceasefire or alliance proposals any more.

maybe I should let an emissary live once in a while...

Here's a question. Does killing religious agents of another faction alter any of your monarch's stats? Maybe kiling Imans as a Catholic king gives you greater piety and offing Inquistiors reduces it? Anyone know?

    I don't think so.

I think only surviving assasinations and inquisitions would yield vices related to black ops.

building religious building do have an effect though.

nah, but IIRC if your agent is caught trying to kill another Catholic agent (bishop, cardinal) you may get excommed.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't been caught in a long time ;)

    I doubt that.

the faction that got their guy whacked might get a little peeved though.
