This idea is from the .com but I thought it might be good to do it here too. Anyway on the eve of battle in RTW what would your speech to your men be.

describes peaceful rustic scene of homes. describes pillage, rapine, murder. this is what we shall experience if we don't defeat them (even though we may be invading, same speech: preemptive strike).

there are those who say dying for your country is the most noble thing you can do,
well that wont win us this fight,
the way to win this fight is not to die for our country,
but to make the enemy dies for his.

    Heres mine.

*General rides up and down the front lines of the roman legionaries*

    Men,
As we stand here confronted by the enemy,
we must remember that all that we hold dear lies behind us.
we are the last line of defence,
all the other armies who have stood against this foe has died,
once great cities lie as ashes and dust.
The bodies of are people lie slaughtered in their wake.
And our temples have been desercrated.

We are the last roman army
After us is women and children right up to the gates of Rome.
When we lie dead on this field all that our fathers and their fathers and all the generations of Romans have built will be but shadows and dust of a forgotten empire.

Every man amongst you must make his choice,
whether it is to run and save your lives and forever live in the shadow of it shame and the sorrow for lost comrades.

*General gets of horse and accepts shield from aide*

Or will you stand here and fight with me,
I do not wish for what I have served all my life consumed by flames,
And I will not allow this to happen, if I die in combat I will know that you shall avenge my death with ten thousand enemy dead.

    For your families,
    for those you have lost,
    for your friends,
    for your comrades,
    for your honor,
    for your glory,
    And for rome.

    ROMA VICTOR.

*the General walks out of his tent and looks over his men*

Men of Rome, i'll just give you a friendly little reminder that if you don't kill the enemy here today, they'll kill you, so wouldn't it be easier simply to just kill them first?

Putting in a shameless plug for my story in the Mead Hall, here is a prebattle speech I have the Welsh leader give his troops before a key battle with the Saxons (I know, it's unrelated to Rome, but it is a pre-battle speech)

At dawn, the day of the battle, Caradoc knew his men would be fearful when they saw the larger Saxon force. To get their spirits up, he ordered the warriors to coat themselves in woad paint, in the old Celtic tradition, and to ignore the cold and snow and go into battle bare-chested. He assembled them in a snow-coated field, mounted his horse and called out to them: “You have fought with me in Defet. You have come from Cerniu with my brother. You have come together, like our people, and here on this field of battle you will forge the destiny of our people For the first time since Arthur was our king, our people are one. Our armies are one. And here we stand, on the doorstep of the Lleogyr, prepared to bleed and die for the birthright of Britain We will be outnumbered today. We will be outnumbered tomorrow. But we have something our enemies lack – four centuries of rage, four centuries of pain that have earned us our right to take back this island For four centuries the Saxons have divided us, preyed upon us, pushed us into the mountains. We have returned, and they will know our pain On your shoulders are the hopes and dreams of our ancestors. In your hands is the destiny of our people. In your hearts lies the triumph of a new day”

The men cheered wildly and pounded their spears on their shields. Caradoc led them forward to meet the enemy, and they kept screaming as they marched.

I would probably say this until they would revolt "OBEY ME, fight, die DO NOT FAIL ME. This land shall fill my coffers and you shall live a day longer if you succeed". But after the revolt. "Fight bravely, make Rome proud and you shall be rewarded"

    Sons of Jupiter,

You stand assembled today as the finest army ever to walk upon Gaia. For centuries uncounted, your fathers, and their fathers, have fought to establish your birthright. One day, you will die. That day may be today. You have no choice over when you die or how you die. But you do have a choice over how you will live. When you enter Hades and await judgement, your forefathers will greet you. Will you have honored them and proceed with them to Elysium? Or will you be cast away in shame, to proceed to Tarturus to skulk in your cowardice for all time? I tell you here and now, you can and will be victorious. All that is required is the will, which only you can provide.

Today, we march forth, for Jupiter, for Mars.
Today we march forth to pay our debt to our fathers and to build tomorrow for our sons.
Today we march forth to declare the glory that is Rome.

Let all who hear that name tremble in fear at the coming of our armies.

:: The General rode his steed out infront of his legions. He looked back behind him at his men... They were farmers, young and old, mixed in with men too young to fight in the legions themselves, what would've been considered militia in the old days. A raised army, not standing...He looked foreward and acrossed the planes at the opposite side of the battlefield. He reared his horse towards his men. ::

My brethren, We can not allow the enemy to advance any farther. Do not forget about your families at home, make them proud, We are ROMANS We live and die by the sword when it comes to war. We will not fail Just like my father before me, Paullus I, who died at the Battle of Cannae, valiantly fighting the Carthagians, attempting to rally the Roman Legionaires to fight as General Varro retreated like the coward he is

We may lose this battle...it is possible. But only if you don't cooperate with each other. Forget about me I am a Roman just like the all of you I will ride my horse into combat, into the flames of the hottest fire. We will march like a giant boulder rolls down a mountain

:: The General unsheathed his blade, pointed it to the sky, and then back at the enemy. ::

Do not fret I will be at the head of the charge, may my courage and bravery effect all of you to fight for your homes Remember, if we lose this battle here today, there will be no tomorrow for all of us. If you do survive, you will be at the hands of the vile enemy. We will not take a step backwards, there is only one direction. Foreward If you see someone running, and you are not engaged, kill them They do not deserve to live under the Rome

Knowing that, Anyone who not wish to fight this battle, go home now. You do not belong here, and go ahead and sit idlely by as the enemy rampages through your homes, takes your wives and children from you, and strips you down to animals.

:: The General looked over his men slowly seeing all unsheath their swords. He smiled, rearing his horse back around. His lieutenants joining him. ::

Forget rituals for this battle...Fight like fierce lions. We can not afford to lose we must not

:: The General reared his horse and then charged foreward, his army behind him, charging as well...the enemy army was close. He yelled out to his troops, just before he clashed into the enemy lines. :: Not one step backwards

:: The battle that ensued was violent, and bloody. Romans who forgot their rituals of combat, and fought all they could, taking any chance to slay the enemy, The battle would decimate both armies, causing a forceful retreat of the attacking force, and a reluctant retreat of the defending force at once. When the men rallied seeing the enemy leave the battlefield they searched for their General. They found his body...laying on the ground with a 20 foot pike through his chest. His eyes were closed and his hand was near his blood stained sword, laying next to the sword was the Enemy General, who was killed by a deep neck wound. This encouraged the troops to fight harder for their valiant General in the upcoming battles. ::

[ Yeah I know there wasn't a Aemillius Paullus II, or was there? So what do you guys think? ]

Sitt before the legion on your horse and say:

    Legionares

"What we do today, what we achive, will never be forgotten
Think not of your lifes, but of Rome, the City of cities
Think of the Emperor, think of The gods, think of Glory
Today we shall march with the strength of Jupiter
Even if the enemy strikes you down you will find yourself in Elysia, a place of evergreen grass and you name shall be written in stone as a champion of Rome
What we do today shall Ecco In Eternity and Mars shall salute You"

    Sons of Rome....

You have come far from your homeland and far from your families and friends just to be here, fighting under my command, against Rome's hated enemies...and I thank you, and I am honoured you are here with me. TODAY... We will show the blasphemous heathens that they stand no chance against Rome TODAY... We shall bring the pillars topped with eagles to foreign lands with uncivilised barbaric wastelands TODAY, Sons of Rome...is your finest hour, where swords will clash, arrows will fly, and the blood of Rome's enemies will be spilt in the name of the Senate and Empire...Let the grace of the Emperor be spread along these lines, and take heart that your brave leader is awaiting news of your victory in Rome...that you shall come into the enemy's capital as Liberators, leave with jubilation from the citizens, and we shall return to Rome...not as hated and vile dirt-ridden soldiers, but gold-armoured heroes

I'll let you in on a little secret- the battle plan. Now boys, this requires every one of you to do your part, which is why I'm telling you this.

    Listen carefully, now.

Go over there, walk forwards. And kill the other guy before he kills you.
