    roman factions.

as you may or may not know untill 88 bc most of the italian peninsula was under the control of italian allied nations (allied to rome that is) with roman "colony" cityies dotted abotu within their lands, but the italians apart from payign rome tax and giving roem troops in tiems of war, had a large degree of autonomy, in 91 BC most of the italians lead primarily by the Samnites and Marsi broek of their alliances, sacked the roamn collonies in their lands and tried to take rome itself, with the roman victory in 88 BC all italians south of the river Po were given the citizenship so as to avert such a war happening again (it was the most devestating war italy woudl go through untill Belisarius's bitter campaign against the ostrogoths in the 6th century)

but my point is this: so far as i know the italian allies so important a faction in most of the games time period (the defection of many of them during the second punic war was a pivtoal point in Hannibals success for example) have no part in the game.

please tell me i am mistaken.

further more i am absolutely disgusted at the way the roman factions are organised. for one to give an entire faction to the julii who for the majority of the game length were a minor patrician family only just holding on to their seats in the senate by the skin of their teeth, untill they recieved copius monetary assistance from one Gaius Marius (who i am sure will not credit a mention in the game, despite being hailled during his life as the third founder of rome). CA has simply divided italy up among three famous men (Scipio Africanus, Julius Caesar, and Brutus) without actually bothering to look at actual roman control in the areas at the times. roman control was fluid, and to have one mans family control an area throughtout the game (provided noone conquers him) is utterly stupid.

Italy was surly far from a monolithic block, and the various gens Italiae differed greatly from each other. It would be surly cool to make a mod where all factions are accuratly depicted at 300 BC..

Needless to say that the 3 factions in the game have no historic basis - they did it to stop Rome from being too strong, although I wouldn't say that Rome would be the most powerful faction back than.

    Well, you are wrong about that as;
    1. The Marian reforms of the Legion are incorporated into the game
    2. And I wouldn't be surprised if the old man himself puts in an appearance circa 115BCE.

CA's effort to address the fractious political situation that resulted in the end of the republic is OK by me. It isn't perfect but it is a viable way to demonstrate the dynamics of the time. At least Roman power isn't one entity, as Caesar, Crassus and Pompey knew only too well.

good to here Marius is getting some credit in the game, and if he does turn up in the game, i hope Sulla does too, so i can smite that arrogant pup.

By giving each of the 3 Roman faction an area of Italy instead of breaking it up into Roman colonies and independent cities, seems to me that it would just make the Devs jobs simpler.

Or am I just missing your point?
I don't wanna get off on a rant here but............That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Command, come in. Have arrived in Venice, streets filled with water. Please advise.

yeah it would make the Devs job easier, but it also chucks buckets of historical accuracy right out the window

we're moaning about historical acuracy, but look lads and the odd lass around these parts, would you rather have to do new units or add more factions. BKB has shown you can add loads more factions at a later date at least in MTW, CA say it will be the easiest TW game to mod. So calm down and if CA screws up help everybody in our correct mod.

We debated long and hard about how to present the Romans and their Italian allies and all the other powers of the period (Factions etc).
Everyone had there own favourite solutions. In the end we think we chose the best *gameplay* mechanism.

Doing justice to the period (by including as much history as we could) and also making a fun game for as wide an audience as possible to us has been a mammoth task and I think we have done a pretty good job.
We hope when you actually get your mitts on the final product you will be at least moderately pleased with the results.

We shall be pleased... At least until we play the Egyptian faction.

It`s good to hear you on that matter, Intrepid Sidekick; I`m sure that it is no easy task to implement the Italic situatuion back than, I hope and I`m confident that RTW will prove up to great expectations. And when the modability is indeed high we can and will tweak it acording our wishes
