very interesting, we can build sewers.
Thanks for that alman9898![]()
If we can build roads and bridges to speed our movement, is it possible to destroy roads and bridges to slow enemy movment?

It looks more like a Greek culture overview rather than a Seleucid overview, but whatever.
The Seleucids seem to have an incredible variety of very good troops - Phalanx and Companions I anticipated, cataphracts ok, but now also good "Legionnaires" and armoured elephants. What do these guys not get? Sounds like the #1 faction in terms of available units.
The stuff about the buildings was a little dull. I am not enthusiastic about all the emphasis given to buildings dedicated to particular Gods who will bring particular benefits. Churches prompting the faith and even contentment in MTW I could buy, but shrines to gods that raise weapon quality??

Hmmm... what's with the chariots? I'm pretty sure only the Celts still used them at this time. And is it just me, or is it weird there are more and more varied buildings, yet more and more generic units?![]()

The bladed scythe chariot is a myth that has been around for so long it has been taken as fact...
Anyway they certainly look like an overpowered faction to me, with solid Phalanx Pikemen, Roman-Style Legionaires, Lots of Cavalry along with Cataphracts, Scyth Chariots and Elephants to dominate the flanks
Could someone tell me what their weakness actually is
"Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it."
Nobody used Skythed chariots after 330 BC![]()
But at least they made the Seleukids Greek, as they really were
I am impressed Especially after the Ptolemean MassacreI wasn't expecting an actually Greek faction as the Seleukids... I was expecting some colorful Babylonian, some fearsome Assyrian, maybe a few Hittite in for good measure, a pint of Persian for the heck of it... but this is goooood.
Well, the units do look pretty generic (mostly) but that doesn't bother me. Of course the legionaire argyraspids could be called properly Thireoforoi (that's the only known Greek equivalent to the Roman legionaire) but I won't start nagging about that too![]()
CHIEF HISTORIAN
AFAIK they used scythe chariots at Magnesia 190 BC

Sewers? Eh? What are rivers for?![]()
Seleukids look really good, fun to play methinks. They will most probably become the eastern power in the campaign, that unit roster.
There are accounts for "some skythed chariots" in the Seleukid side, and those accounts proceed to add that those were the first to be disposed by the Roman-Pergamese army, as Eumenes sent his missile infantry against them.
But the (tottally ineffective at Magnesia) Skythed chariot was not an integral part of the Seleukid armies.
CHIEF HISTORIAN
Well they do have the chariots in the dbaol and dbm army lists for the late seleucids, and these lists tend to be researched quite well.

Granius Licinianus also mentiones:
Mithridates had collected many soldiers from all the states, and after learning of the disaster he supplemented them with new levies. 63 He sent out 65,000 foot-soldiers and cavalrymen, and seventy scythed chariots
and in Festus' late 4th-century A.D. Breviarium:
Antiochus, the most powerful king of Syria, waged a formidable war on the Roman people. He had 300,000 armed men, and also drew up a battle line of scythed chariots and elephants
OF course no account is given about the effectiveness, and I do admit that centurys before the greeks had no problems dealing with them (in the Anabasis Xenophon tells us that the Greek Mercenary hoplites just stepped out of the way, letting the chariots drive through their ranks without a casualty)
But I do believe that the chariots might be quite usefull against undiciplined or peasant ropps, and might have been something of a terror weapon against revolting peasants.
Hmmm....two questions:
Some buildings have Latin names instead of Greek. How accurate is that?
There seems to be a Decere ship. Did such a thing really exist? I cannot find any references about it.

It also calls the silver shield pikemen agryraspids. But iirc every faction will have an imitation legionnare unit,or at least thats what i heard.Wellthe seleucids don't seem to be terribly butchered compared to other factions.and most of their units are pretty close to historical correctness.

Your mentioning of making them Assyrian, Babylonian, Hittite and Persian, actually made me think... perhaps CA is doing all this outdated sh*t might have something to do with the much talked about modding properties of Rome... maybe they added all this stuff to make it possible to make and easier to make an Old Testament style mod.... thats a possibility Really CA, was very good with the accuracy in Shogun, even if the Kensai were a little overpowered, and very good with Meideval despite the Jomsvikings and Sherwood Forresters, which I can forgive. Not ot give CA exuses, but they must have a good reason for all this bullshit...Originally Posted by [b
Oh and I highly doubt that Seleucid Legionaires are as good as the Romans..
Oh, well, the Latin name thing is a common disease... most Greek names and words ending to -on have been latinicized to end with an -um... what can you doOriginally Posted by [b

As for the Decere, they use again the Roman form of the Greek name, which is Deceres (Δεκήρης).
Those ships were real monsters, used mainly by the Seleukids, Ptolemeans and later the Romans - several of those made their closing appearance in the famous naval battle of Aktion.
50 huge oars per side (in two banks, 25 each), 5 oarsmen for each oar. The ship was rather cumbersome, allthough huge and very powerful. It's crew exceeded the 540 people (500 rowers only) and it could support many marines (some say more than 200) and the Romans used that advantage to it's greatest extent. BTW I don't understand why they called it Deceres, though...

A very impressive unit roster for sure![]()
There is almost all, beside a light shock infantry, a Light and Medium Horsearcher, Slingers and maybe Elite Archers.
But with Rhodos, Crete, Thracia and the wider Innerasian and Euroasians steppes before your doorstep it sould be hardly a problem to get even these...

I imagine they may be like the Germans in MTW, surrounded at all sides, and often falls apart (as it really did). I mean, the Parthians, the rest of the Greek world and others will want a chunk out of them.

Wow, I am really impressed by this faction preview The Seleucids appear to be very strong, with only a minor weakness in the archery department. I was particularly pleased with the description of the phalangite - the pike is gripped with both hands while the small shield is strapped to the left arm This army will absolutely mop the floor with all those Rameses clones...
However, I noted that this faction preview was a lot longer and more in-depth than the ones we've seen before. Perhaps those earlier faction previews were rather incomplete, leaving out large numbers of units and buildings? I wouldn't be surprised to see some Greek pikeman units in Egypt's army.

Problem though, every other faction apart from Roman, Seleucid and Parthian seems really weak and incorrect...![]()
The Carthaginians seem pretty good, in both power and historical accuracy.Originally Posted by [b
The Egyptians, I've given up on. The other factions are a little disappointing, but not disasterous. Except the Gauls seem really impoverished in terms of interesting or unique units.
Ok now you can officialy give up on Greeks in the Egyptian army.
The faction vid on the new activision site has egyptian new kingdom pikemen.
Well at least they are using the pikes with two hands.![]()
