1/ The Exorcist( Great film, the subtle things are scary in it compared to the Exorcism itself with lines like:

Psychiatrist: Is it Captain Howdy?
Regan MacNeil: I don't know.
Psychiatrist: If I ask him to tell me, will you let him answer?

Psychiatrist: Why not?
Regan MacNeil: I'm afraid.

And the spider walk takes you quite by surprise as well!

2/ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Also well ahead of its time and that table scene is brutal and the killings are quick and very life like. I was actually clapping when the fat guy in a wheel chair got it, he was annoying man


3/ The Omen

Well acted and executed and in my opinion the best horror film ever made.

4/ Cannibal Holocaust

Sick, violent and utterly revolting. Simply great

5/ : The Changelling and American WereWolf in London

That boy being drowned in the bathtub and that ball bouncing down the stairs is bloody eerie. The latter film, the best man-wolf changing in history, with the Howling one not to far behind.

6/ : The Evil Dead Trilogy. Funny, crazy and utterly enjoyable. Bruce Campbell is the man!

7/ The Night of the Hunter and The Shining: Very much a horror. Great for the 1950's and robert Mitchum is outstanding as the evil preacher and The Shining is probably one of Kubricks best and Nicholsons best ever performance save one flew over the Cuckoo's nest.

8/ The Blair witch Project and the last broadcast:

Great docum-films with them being generally scary at times. The "Tell me where you are Josh" echo is weird man.

9/ Black Christmas and Hallowean

BC was the first of the new slasher filmed in the mid seventies and not like the trash you get now. Hallowean is here because of the good acting, style of the film and the genuine coolnest of Michael Myers.

10/ The woman in Black: This Drama on itv( British patrons would probably only have scene this) scared the crap out of me and was very hard to get for my video collection. The scenes where she is in his hotel room learing over him in the darkl and the ending with her gliding across the lake are nerve shattering to say the least.

Films which were great but didn't make the final cut were:

1/ What lies Beneath

2/ The Fog

3/ Rosemarys baby

4/ The Mothman Prophecies(really underated, i really enjoyed this one)

5/ Near Dark(The best new Vampire film)

6/ Salem's lot( The lad floating and trying to get in the window, the vampire in the rocking chair and Mr Barlow are great horror moments.

7/ Candyman/ Frightnight( Got these films in a double pack, Candyman is a good solid film and fright night is great, tongue in cheek film with chris saradon playing a marvlous vampire

Now i'm glad you put Jacobs ladder, that film is a bloody cool one.

The ring isn't a bad film, that bit when the dark haired girl comes out the TV takes you back! I wasn't exepecting that. I also like the prophecy, a civil war in Heaven with Chris Walken as the evil Gabriel.

AngelHeart with Micky Rourke and Robert De Niro, the latter playing Louis Cypher. Great, intelligent Horror, which you often don't get.

Forgot this British Beauty, Dog Soldiers, a great werewolf film with good dialogue and big, ugly werewolves taking on a bunch of squaddies in the scottish highlands, what more could you ask for?

Not really a horror as such, but a film that makes you jump a few times was Signs. the bit at the childrens party made me jump the second time i saw it even though i knew it was coming!! also the bit when they drop the flash lights and you can only hear what is going on was quite unnerving!

A good modern day effor in my opinion!

I don't mine the director of that m. night shamaylan films. The only bit i jumped at in signs was when he was saying goodnight to his young daughter and he looks up and sees someone on the roof staring at him.

I'm looking forward to the village in about 2 weeks. Looks good, hope it delivers

I was watching it at home in the dark on my own which adds to the suspense, which i think is the best way to watch horror films (or even better, with a lovely young lady who feels the need to hold on to you for the duration of the film! and hey, maybe even afterwards as well!!)

The Village looks good, will definatly have to see that.

1/ Exorcist.But only the first version.Over did the Demon face in the secound.

2/Texas Chainsaw Massacre.Nasty stuff .Anyone seen the remake ,and is it(Probably not.) any good?

3/Turn of the Screw.Very creepy Ghost story ,made sometime in the fiftys I think.

4/The Ring.Still got to see the Japanese version ,but the American one was pretty scary anyway.

5/Bride of Frankeinstien.I was about five years old ,so yep it got to me ,and's still a great film by anyones standards.

6/Sixth Sense. I'll always go for a good ghost story over a slasher any-day.

7/The others. Would have been better if it hadn't come so soon after the Sixth Sense ,but pretty good .

8/The Shinnig.A certain Mr King hated it ,but after reading the book ,he should be grateful that some one turned that peice of rubbish into a good film.

9/Halloween. John Carpenter when he was good.

10/The Village of the Dammed .The sixtys version.Stay well away from the John Carpenter version ,who didn't under stand the story at all.
Better yet ,read the book ,which is the best version of them all.

As a matter of fact I watched it today, and I turned it off. One of the girls has [a pleasant looking bustline] tho, but only silicons wave in the wind like that.

I have to say i really enjoyed some british new horror i have seen. 28 days later was really cool but the eneding sucked, quite like to see the alternative ending though. Also enjoyed Long, Time Dead. Original, short and sweet. Predictable ending though.

Fragony is right the only saving grace of the new Texas chainsaw film was that birds bust, apart from that it wasn't that great. I prefered wrong turn and that is saying something

Fragony.It was almost a given that the new Chainsaw wasn't going to be anywhere near the first ,but at least I know where I can pick the first one up for next to nothing.

Have yet to see Blair Which Project ,but I might just rent it tomorrow ,as this thread's started to get me in the mood

thos two movies are the best Peter Jacksson ever made!... its really shows that you new zeelanders are really twisted!...

favorite scene in Braindead must be when he kicks down the door holding a lawnmower (sp?) and says someting like; Partys over (in a nice new zeelander dialect)

I listed 'the Ugly', it is from New-Zealand as well. Not as gory as those 2 you mention, but very creepy and well acted. It is a bit of a mix of silence of the lambs and the excorsist, be sure to put it on your to do list

My top horror films would be divided in two one section as actual good stand alone films such as Alien and outright gorefests like Texas chainsaw massacre not classic films barry norman wise but worthy as plenty bang for yer buck cult classic's.

2. The Omen (the first one)
3. The Island of Dr. Moreau (the original; is it SF or horror?)
4. Alien (the first one)
5. Dracula (the latest remake with Gary Oldman as the Count)
6. The Ring
7. Blair Witch Project (I know, I know, but it was horrifying the first time I saw it)
8. Poltergeist (first one only)
9. Angel Heart (cross between a horror and a mystery)
10. The Mummy (The new one; cheesy as hell but a great popcorn flick nonetheless)

These are just the first 10 that came to mind, and as you can tell, I don't really like "slasher" flicks at all. I see some on other's lists though that should probably replace others on mine.

For instance, Salem's Lot was great, as even though its got the feel of a cheap TV movie, it featured several scenes that were/became classic "vampire" (the kid at the window, James Mason's version of Renfield, etc.). Event Horizon was also quite disturbing. Sixth Sense was riveting the first time I saw it, but just not that suitable for repeat viewings after you know all the twists and turns (whereas in a film like The Ring, I wasn't that impressed the first time, but then saw/heard/noticed new things each time I watched it thereafter).

I'll agree with a previous poster about Signs. For all its boring faults, the scene at the kid's birthday party was masterfully handled; I literally jumped off my seat the first time I saw it.

28 Days Later wasn't bad.The new fast zombies were a vast improvement on the old shambling ones were you had to fall down for them to actually catch you.Same for the remake of Day of the Dead.
Event Horizon-an evil Sam Neil was quite disturbing.
Signs-minimalistic and tense
Salems Lot-scared the you know what out of me when i was a kid
Alien-where is it?Why are there so many dark organic looking pipes on the walls?
Living Doll-late 80s film about a morgue attendant keeping a corpse of a girl he had a crush on in his house and having sex with her.He saw her as she always was.We saw a badly decompossing corpse all the time with cliff richards light melody playing in the background*shudder*

Man, did that scare the crap out of me. I just have to see one frame or clip of that movie and it sends shivers up my spine.

Salem's Lot and Jaws were pretty huge too. I guess I'm showing my age, but these have stood the test of time. Of the more recent ones, I think Blair Witch will hold up. Sixth Sense was pretty good too. I haven't seen the Ring.

5. and i guess my all time favorite is Night of the Living Dead. it might not have been quite as scary as some, but i still remember a group of us going into a theatre, stoned, going down in front of the first row of seats and laying on the carpet there and looking up at that giant screen. that's when theatres still only had one screen and it was BIG. the ONLY way to watch that movie :)

Poltergeist (the first one, Spielberg). Its on my list. Damn good movie, but as often happens, the sequels (non-Spielberg) dragged its name through the mud until everyone forgot all about the first.

Yes, because Spielberg's contract prevented him from directing ET and Poltergeist at the same time. But the film & story were Spielberg's idea, he co-wrote the script, produced the movie, and hired Hooper to direct.

Although not scary but hilarious and filled with gore, the great Braindead is one of my favourite horror films, on par with the evil dead for humour and comic violence

Which was the name of the novel by Henry James.

That boy in that film is scary man. Especially the way he flirts with the governess and when that scene where the woman plays hide and seek and that ghost is looming out of the darkness, with just a pane of glass separating them.

Event Horizon and The Shining were certainly somewhat disturbing, but the moment that made me jump more than I have ever done was in 28 days later, when the army mansion is under atack, and its pitch black outside, with lightning, and the main character has released the pet zombie, and one of the troops walks up to a completely black window, and the lightning lights it up, and theres nothing there, and then the lightning goes off again and the zombie's face is there, just looking into the window - that was pretty tense.
