I'm more of an appreciator of Latin-American literature (mostly Miguel Angel Asturias and Gabriel Garcia Marquez), yet my favourite novel of all time is by a British author -- Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory. I can't say that I've liked much of his other work, but something about TPATG hits home just as effectively and credibly as the best Latin-American works.

I'm finding that at the moment I can't get enough of a book called 'Blood Red Hand', but then I suppose I am biased on that one, since it is my own work in progress epic.

Entering the realm of books that are actually published, I don't have a favourite; I have a collection of books I like and will read quite happily, but no favourites. I can see room for improvement in every single book I read; rather depressing really and it does prevent me from loving any one book above all others.

I don't have a favourite-I love reading too much to be able to select a particular book like that. It wouldn't feel right.

I like to think I never get fixated on any one thing (recent events may show otherwise) so I odn't have a favourite book.

I recently read Zafon's Shadow of the Wind, that was really rather good. Or was it by Carax...

I'm a huge fan of Tom Clancy and, my favorite book of his is The Cardinal of The Kremlin definately Clancy at his best.

Temptation in Paradise

It's about a beautiful, brown-eyed woman named Lourdes trying to break out of her humdrum life at the telephone company. She appears plain and sensible, but can be very beautiful and desireable--once she removes her glasses and lets her hair down--with a body that looks hot on a paperback book cover.

Her nosy, talkative best friend, who has dated a long string of losers, talks her into going to a Pacific Island for a vacation, where Lourdes accidently bumps into a hunk named Rick on the beach. He has a large shaven chest, which is always exposed by his open shirt, and a perpetual two-day stubble on his face. He is a Hollywood stuntman with a hidden past.

Lourdes' friend tries to talk her into taking a chance with this man, but naive Lourdes, who secretly has fallen in love with Rick, is hesitant. One night, there's a storm . . .

I won't ruin the ending.

The Cardinal Of The Kremlin was great, some of Clancy's books are fairly slow. I love LOTR and the Silmarillion (both by Tolkien of course)

Before you all cry heresy by me saying that a fantasy book can be any good let me explain to people what I think makes a good book.
An engaging soryline
Realistic events
Characters you can feel for
Rereadability

And the one that isn't very good. The fact that you become so engrossed in the story you finiah it in one night and when you check your clock, you find it's 6.45am and it's time to get up. That has personaly happened to me on only three books.
Number one was the LOTR
Number two and three were books by an author called L.E Modesitt Jr. The two books in question were the Magi'i of Cyador and Scion of Cyador. These two books are incredible they take you in and can immerse you in the world he creates. The characters seem real and tangible. I have read both books at least seven times each And I never tire of them.
I would suggest you all buy those two just to see whether you like them and if you do he's written many more books.

I'll make a case for my book as well.

Atomised is about 2 brothers, one is a total hedonist that is addicted to sex, the other is a bio-schientist that is trying to create the new non-sexual man. It is a brilliant and totally vicious book where both characters are a metaphore of the duality of our society. Some people have trashed it as an evil book, and it is sometimes unbearable to read when every positive aspect of humanity is reduced to nothing but wickedness and lust, but those people don't understand that it is a comedy. It is absolutely ruthless but everyone should read imho.

The Lion Of Macedon by David Gemmel

its about the life Of Parmenion rumoured to be the half spartan mastermind of the Battle Of Leuctra, he was also general to Phillip of Macedon, and Alexander the great, of course the Gemmel takes many liberties with the story

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

If you've read the books you know why. Wicked story, great characters, well thought it, etc. Definately worth a read if you like Fantasy
