Puerto Rico is a US commonwealth. Most US commonwealth's have their own basketball (and other) teams. I believe commonwealth atheletes are also allowed to compete on US teams if their commonwealth doesn't have a team.

Mostly because the IOC (International Olympic Committee) decided that they were a sovereign entity, despite their relationship with the US - similar (tho' less so) to Guam & American Samoa, which also have teams.

But I will grant you: the US relationship with PR seems to change about every 5-6 years. So far, every time they have a referendum on independence, it gets voted down (by them).

To get back on-topic, Puerto Rico (and the Dominican Republic) are major sources of athletes for many US professional sports, noteably baseball, basketball, and (gasp!) soccer.

how the hell did PR beat USA ? wonder what odds the bookies would have given that....

p.s british commonwealth should all be one team the medal haul would be amazing.... (ok so they shouldn't but it would make UK look better)

All i got say is that this situation with the so called basketball team we sent over there keeps getting sadder and sadder. First Turkey than Puerto Rico, who next Nepal. This team is just one big joke.

PR was up by 22 at halftime, the US managed to pull the score within 8 but, the PR point guard Arroyo was simply awesome and, managed to pull his team through with a couple 3 pointers.

I dunno, would be good to see a commonwealth team whoop the French or the Springboks!! Do you go with Jonny Wilkinson or Carlos Spencer at 10 though! now that is a selection headache!!!
