Adding more provinces to the campaign map.

I would have posted this in the mod forum where it probably belongs but for some incredibly silly reason I can't.

Anyway, I love playing MTW (just the original patched version, I don't have the expansion) however a major problem I've run into is that playing in the early period (which I immensely prefer) by the 1250's or even earlier in some cases the entire map is dominated by just two or three powers, I never play global conquest so its not my fault, I'm usually content to establish a defendable frontier and send out the occasional expeditionary force to mess someone up or perhaps fight off an invasion.

The problem I believe is the enormous provinces in the game, a faction loses one province and its liable to be screwed it makes it far too easy to conquer huge swathes of the map, (anyone else experience this problem?) Now I was surprised to hear that in mods one can actually change the province borders etc.

Long story short what I'm after is a mod that works with the original patched version of the game (no expansion) that adds more provinces to the campaign map, preferably many more provinces. It would be nice if I could get one that other than this changes little to nothing else, but if not then I'd be happy also with a more drastic mod that does so.

I'd just like to play from 1090 through to 1453 without it turning into an extremely historically unrealistic (even outside reason) slugging match between two major powers.

There is not a mod for the original medieval but for the viking invasion there are few whcih add new provinces. My BKB super mod, Viking Horde XL mod and WesW(not out yet) mod have/ will have many new provinces in the game.

How does a mod add new provinces? Does it just split up existing ones into smaller provinces with new names?

Its possible to add eight new provinces.

I also i spilt up greece in the game and added Epirus and Thessaly, with Morea in there for High period.

Others such as Lithuania with samogitia added there and Aquatine(sp) with gascony.

Too solve your problem further, you could also try to mod the playing styles of some AI's. Change their characteristics to a less expansionist/agressive inclination.

Now, I know it would be great if I would also tell you just how to do this, but alas, me not not how. Check with the mod guru's.

You can only add 8 provinces?, well damn I was hoping for more *looks at Europa Universalis II map*:(

I think I have an idea on how to change the AI to more passive ways of thinking (some guys from here on the temp forum helped me with making Novgorod playable in early), so I'll try screwing around there, thanks for the suggestion Louis.

Is there an actual place that has mods specifically just for the original without the expansion?, usually I'd just buy the expansion but I'm saving up at the moment for something and Rome Total war will be coming out soon aswell, so I've put it off.
