    Default Fps

    Hi,

I am curious what FPS you guys get.

When I use 1280*1024, AA high, everything max I get around 16-18

When I turn everything to the lowest, same resolution I get around 18-20 a small increase and huge quality sacificed.

However, when FPS around 20, which they are mostly in strategic view, it runs fine and feels real smooth. I used FRAPS 2.1 to find out FPS and when I recorded it fell to 10 fps but still it was very playable.

What is your experiences in regards to FPS?

I get a solid 40 FPS on 1280*1024 with everything set at high. i can't change the resolution any higher than that, my monitor does not support it ~:p.

I have a xeon dual processor(2.8 ghz), gf fx 5950 ultra card, and 2 gigs of ram running on WinXP.

ive had some issues with fps suprisingly , but looking around some tech sites the 6800's look to be having sum issues with the game.

    I have 3.75ghz P4

    1gb RAM @ 235mhz 3,2,2,7 PAT enabled

    6800GT @ 6800Ultra speeds ...

...and i get falls to 27fps (GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! : ) ... its usually between 40-55 but at some views, especially close up it hits low 30's, to high 20's.

Even Doom3 has much higher fps than this on my comp, so im pretty sure there is something wrong here (whether it be drivers, game specific issue, or whatever)

needless to say i hope whatever is causing my problem is solved before the full game is out, as a lot of 6800 owners wont be happy ;S

sjak goto here and download the latest version. It runs in the background (on your taskbar).. and will display your fps in the top corner of RTW in-game screen.

edit: oops you are already using fraps lol

Oh, do not be saying things like that.....

Just got myself a 6800GT at the weekend and I did not need to hear that....

Got to say though it has done wonderful things for Doom 3 and it's performance in CS: Source is making me really look forward to HL2..

i ran the game with/without AA, in 1024 and 1600, low detail/high detail, and always get the same framerate: 15-20fps with occasional slowdowns to 11 fps

the game still feels smooth enough tho, better than mtw anyway

i'm guessing my cpu is the limiting factor here

    Anyone try removing Triple buffering??

This was always an FPS limiting factor w/ Il-2 Sturmovik.

I know mine is set to false and I am smooth as hell at 1600x1200 32bit - admittedly I haven't put FRAPS on it yet - that may shatter my illusions.

    Athlon AMD XP 2100+
    768 MEG of 2100DDR RAM
    G4 Ti4600 Leadtek card w/ 128 MEG RAM

strangely enough, the more details I max out the better the FPS are. Except unit detail, that kills fps to me. So with unit detail on medium and eveything else on max (inc AA), I get a steady of 25-30 fps, even more when I am zooed all the way in.

good to hear your fps is getting better now sjak, hopefully RTW, as well as drivers will be better optimised by the time the full game hits the shelves.

Mine doesnt feel actually slow/jerky, just not as smooth as i would like. Where as some people think games feel TOTALLY smooth at 25+ fps, anything below 40-50fps just doesnt feel good enough for me ;/ .. especially after spending so much on hardware lately.

Il see how it all progresses, anyone remeber MTW demo??? the final battle CRAWLED along due to a sound bug, but the final game played a LOT better,

Speaking of sound - check your Audio Playback Hardware acceleration setting - be sure to back it off of FULL a notch or two.

I guarentee that you will not notice a difference in sound quality and it just may save you some system overhead.

    amd XP2400+ (2.0 GHz)
256 MB PC133 RAM running at 266 MHz
    Radeon 9800pro 128MB (Catalyst 4.3 driver)
    Win98se
    Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Audio

I increased the size of the units in Trebia by about 25% so I have 3000 men on the field. 1024x768, high unit detail, no anti-aliasing, no TNL, no desync movements, grass is seen out to 50 feet. Using FRAPS with almost all units in the field of view I get 10 - 15 fps which gives quite noticable lag. The framerate increases with less men in the field of view. It gets up to 25 - 30 fps with very few men in the field of view. This isn't very good performance considering I'm 2x above the min cpu requirement. Possibly my machine isn't fully optimized, but I don't think CA has ever given a typical frame rate to expect for any particular kind of system.

In MTW custom battle at 800x600 with 3000 men, I get 10 - 15 fps which substantiates the official statement that "Over 10,000 fully polygonal, motion captured men can be displayed simultaneously with virtually no sacrifice of performance compared to Medieval: Total War.". For me, RTW demo is performing just as well or better than MTW. The low end of that fps range with all the men in the field of view, and the upper end of that with only a few units in the field of view. In a 4v4 replay with 8000 men, it's about the same range 10 - 15 fps, but low end of that with all 8000 in the field of view, and the upper end with about one army in the field of view.

One thing about the MTW custom battle test with 3000 men is that it started out at about 20 fps, but after less then a minute into the game it dropped down to 10 fps and didn't ever recover back to the higher rate.

Both MTW and RTW demo seem cpu bound but there is some dependence on the number of men in the field of view with MTW and more dependence on that with the RTW demo. I suspect the reason for the dependence is that the position on the map of each man is under cpu control. It's not as though each unit is a fixed geometry that you could just shift and rotate in the video card. Each unit is an elastic body that must be able to constantly change shape as determined by the random number generator and that has to be calculated by the cpu for each man at 14 frames per second. Also, MTW drives my cpu to a higher temperature than anything else I run which indicates a heavy cpu usage.

I suspect you need more ram and XP...

    Turn TNL on too.
