    Default STW 1.11 Crash to Desktop under XP in castle assault maps

    Hi,

    message title says it all.

    I've posted a thread about this in the Technical Library area but it hasn't drawn any responses so far, so I thought I'd flag it up here. I haven't worked out how to insert a hyperlink to take you direct to it but it's not hard to find - it's the first thread below the stickies.

    As a stop-gap, I could try the auto-resolve feature but I don't know how much bias it gives to the castle defenders and have heir units I don't want to mess up (auto-Res has an annoying habit of distributing casualties evenly amongst units, even ones which wouldn't normally participate in the attack).

    Either that, or sit and wait Opportunity for two victories for the price of one going down the pan :

    Hello EatYerGreens,

    I recall STW doing that, even STW WE/MI did it in huge battles. It had to do with overloading the graphical memory with dead bodies?

    I'ld suggest to start with updating to STW 1.12.

    No excess of dead bodies in this case. There's something about the castle - maybe just the textures - which my vid card obviously doesn't agree with. With or without armies on display, living or dead, it goes bang, just as the first corner of the castle appears at the very edge of the screen. Hills, trees, clouds, weather conditions - no problem. Regular battle maps are fine.

    The discussion is now underway in the Apothecary...

    Short version of what I'm saying there is "it was working fine, just the other week, now it's not and I don't know what changes may have triggered it".

    A couple of other glitches have begun to emerge and I'm not sure if there's any link but I might as well mention them here.

    I occasionally see black boxes around isolated trees in regular battle maps. No such problems in the dense forests, oddly enough.
    Also, in the strategy map, I recently got a pair seige-progress reports from two territories I'd just captured and it gave the same castle name twice - one in Bingo and one in Sanuki - Takamatsu castle, or some such, both times. I double checked with the right-click query and it showed there too.

    Could be a pointer to file corruption in a quicksave?

    I was wondering if this problem could be fixed in any way. Anybody from CA, perhaps?

    The problem is still present in 1.12 patch, and its very annoying. As soon as the castle should come into view of the camera, bang, ctd. What's wrong with these castles??

    I had that some time ago too. after a reinstall it worked again.
