I'ld suggest to start with updating to STW 1.12.
No excess of dead bodies in this case. There's something about the castle - maybe just the textures - which my vid card obviously doesn't agree with. With or without armies on display, living or dead, it goes bang, just as the first corner of the castle appears at the very edge of the screen. Hills, trees, clouds, weather conditions - no problem. Regular battle maps are fine.

Short version of what I'm saying there is "it was working fine, just the other week, now it's not and I don't know what changes may have triggered it".

A couple of other glitches have begun to emerge and I'm not sure if there's any link but I might as well mention them here.

I occasionally see black boxes around isolated trees in regular battle maps. No such problems in the dense forests, oddly enough.
Also, in the strategy map, I recently got a pair seige-progress reports from two territories I'd just captured and it gave the same castle name twice - one in Bingo and one in Sanuki - Takamatsu castle, or some such, both times. I double checked with the right-click query and it showed there too.

Could be a pointer to file corruption in a quicksave?
