    Real marketing gaffes...

    Coors put its slogan, "Turn it loose," into Spanish, where it was read as "Suffer from diarrhea."

    Clairol introduced the "Mist Stick," a curling iron, into German only to find out that "mist" is slang for manure. Not too many people had use for the "manure stick".

    Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American campaign: Nothing sucks like an Electrolux.

    The American slogan for Salem cigarettes, "Salem-Feeling Free", was translated into the Japanese market as "When smoking Salem, you will feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."

    When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the beautiful baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what's inside, since most people can't read English.

    An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market which promoted the Pope's visit. Instead of "I saw the Pope" (el Papa), the shirts read "I saw the potato" (la papa).

    In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into "Schweppes Toilet Water."

    Pepsi's "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" translated into "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave," in Chinese.

    When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to say "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." However, the company mistakenly thought the spanish word "embarazar" meant embarrass. Instead the ads said that "It wont leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

    The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of signs had been printed that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."

    Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good" came out as "eat your fingers off."

    When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go." After the company figured out why it wasn't selling any cars, it renamed the car in its Spanish markets to the Caribe.

    Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious porno magazine.

    I'll have to add to this. Once a female mormon missionary was finding recruets in Spain. She was called up the the alter by the priest were she meant to say "Yo soy muy avergonzado y el es todo el defecto de ministro"(I am very embarassed and its all the ministes fault) What she said was "I am very pregant and it's all the ministers fault."

    The baby food one made me LOL. Very good.

    How about Chevrolet... they had to send a specialist in marketing to Puerto Rico to find out why the Chevy Nova was selling like fire everywhere but there.

    Then he found out what Nova means in spanish. somthing like "doesn't go".

    These are funny, but some are urban legends.

    In Spanish, "nova", when written as one word, has the same meaning as for English-speakers. It derives from "new star". The American Nova is a renamed Corolla, and is manufactured here. The Caribe is manufactured in Latin America and is not the same as the American version.

    ON a related note, cars are often renamed for various markets. The Nissan Sunny is called the Sentra in the US and Tsuru in Mexico. The name Sunny just doesn't fit our tastes here.

    The baby food jar sounds like an urban legend based on racism, implying that African are stupid enough that:
    a) they are illiterate
    b) they think a food jar is packed with a human baby.

    I'll check Snopes and see if it's listed.

    But most of these are great, Sasaki Kojiro.

    a) I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. The education system prob isn't that great in most(maybe all) African countries. Although, I'm not sure many illiterate peasants* would buy canned baby food.

    b)You probably have a point, although didn't someone post a article about rumors of 'killer cell phone numbers' in Africa?

    *peasant, subsitence farmer, same thing.

    I did, but it got lost in the transision to the new board, but I think the article was from BBC news, it should be possible to find it again.

    edit: adjusted how far back post should be showed and found it.

    When Napoleon took over the Bataafse Republic, he installed his brother, Louis Napoleon, as King of the Low Countries. But Louis did not quite act as his brother wanted him to: he didn't rule with an iron fist. In fact, Louis was quite a good King as Kings go, he even tried to learn the Dutch language.

    But Dutch pronounciation has baffled many a foreigner. When he held a speech to the Dutch people, he wanted to say: 'Ik ben uw Koning' (I am your King). Unfortunatly, he said: 'Iek ben uw konijn', which means: 'I am your rabbit'.
