    Default The Death of MTW

    Hi friends,
I haven't posted since the crash of the old forum, but have been visiting the site daily. I've notivced that not much is going on in the Entrance and Main Hall forums, instead the Colliseum is buzzing impatiently in expectation.
I never had STW so, I don't know how it felt when MTW came. I am not saying that MTW is perfect, but it is the game closest to perfection IMHO. I tend to stick to something once I get to like it, so I sort of feel like I am gonna betray MTW by switching to RTW. Besides, I haven't found anything really that great in the new game to make me switch to it.
Yes, I did play the demo and have seen all the screenshots and videos. And yes, I do see the changes in graphics. Still, I am reluctant to give up MTW for the new "impostor" of PC games. I tend to play MTW long after RTW comes out (I played Starcraft for along time after WC3 came out, and even when I bought it I still liked SC Brood War better).
So my point is, I feel like MTW is like SC and RTW is like WC3. Although WC3 and RTW have better graphics and supposedly better game play, I like the older games better. I feel like they should have made a better version of MTW rather than creating RTW. I know some of you would say that RTW could be modded to MTW, but still it is not the same thing. Anybody else feeling the same way? It's up to us the die hard MTW fans to keep the game alive. RTW is gonna give us a big challange and it won't be easy.

the same debate happened when MTW arrived and discussion on STW dropped off. that's the nature of entertainment. if you're feeling disappointed now, wait until this forum gets flooded with newbies who only know about RTW and have no concept of MTW (or STW).

since you're already familiar with MTW, you'll probably ease into RTW more easily than you think. I know it took me a while to get into MTW, especially since I really loved STW (I learned Japanese because of that game). But now I can't imagine not playing MTW, because it's fantastic.

barring any unexpected events (aren't they all enexpected anyway?) I will most likely remain your humble MTW moderator, and Tosa has already made it known that MTW will continue to enjoy the fullest support from this site and the rest of the Org staff.

Don't worry...even Shogun is still alive in a small way...a 200 match tourney was played just a few months ago and it was alive online until a few months after that, when they shut the servers down. Some people will remain loyal to MTW.

I am guessing that once RTW comes out, a reorganization of the forums will occur. Colosseum should become main hall (RTW discussion), main hall becomes Medieval Hall (MTW discussion). The others will stay the same?

I think RTW will be a better game than MTW because of the better strategy map. The tactical battles have improved graphics but possibly at the expense of worse gameplay. So that aspect may be a wash.

I also did not purchase WC3 and stuck to starcraft because WC3 became too role-playing and character heavy. But I am definitely switching to RTW.

Yah I fear the death of MTW, the game I loved so much.
It was just like when I played AOE2, and then I got the Conquerors expansion. I expected a lot from AOM, but it turned out to be a blunder - at least to me. I always hoped they'd refined a new version of AOE2.

I'm guessing that MTW will live on for a good long while, like AOE2:Conquerors has done for years. I know I'm still in the middle of a good long English campaign, and I've got to experiment with the Danes after that!

so true, nostalgia. I still sometimes go back to AOE2. hmm, the medieval period is nice for many games.

well i like MTW a lot even bothered to get off my fat arse to write (e.g copy and paste) a small guide to MTW economics. But my copy of the game broke and well (no pun intended) i'm broke so i'll just get RTW unless MTW comes down in price. I kinda feel in some ways after the RTW demo though that MTW may well end up being better than the 'superceding' RTW. It kinda feels less 'tacky' and plastic, okay 2d sprites don't provide great graphics, but a wargame is a wargame not an FPS and a lot of people should remember that.

@ king azzole, not really. people kinda leave the forums and there isn't as much strategic innovation any more. If you look around at AOK forums, it's nothing like the haydays.

@ah_dut, I agree. the UI really sucked for Rome and although it seems that diplo would be better, I'm still miffed that no naval combat was put in.

..... so your telling me you will stop playing MTW cause no one comes to a forum? Ooook

I will be playing MTW long after the last person stops logging into these forums. I love the game, and unless something totally blows it out of the water which represents the same time period and the same part of Earth, MTW will be on my hard drive.

true, it will certainly live in one's heart but the reality is that if the community around it stagnates, the quality of discussions (if it exists) etc. will stagnate.

M:TW will not die, but it will to a degree migrate over to the R:TW engine as M:TW 3D!! (Provided that certain PAK extractors and other necessary modding tools are released to the public.) M:TW 3D (title pending, last I recall) will be a community effort with realism and historical accuracy as its focal point, and will surpass the original M:TW in every way.

I am not particularly interested in the history of the Roman Empire, and as such I intend to take full advantage of the modding possibilities of R:TW's engine. Let me ask you a question: certainly you have noticed just how devastating a cavalry charge to the flank or rear has become in the Battle of the Trebia.

Can you imagine what a unit of chivalric knights will be capable of when we're through with it?

And as Barocca's Shogun mod for M:TW was an outstanding success, no doubt the R:TW engine will be heartily welcomed to feudal Japan.

MTW and STW are alive, somewhere, someplace, but not on my Hard Disk. They lie dormant there to be awoken every 2-3 months for a brief activity of 40 minutes.

RTW modded into STW and MTW...well I'd love to see that.

Your dedication to MTW is most commendable! Im sure i'll keep it on my hard drive for a long time yet, but alot will depend on how enjoyable RTW is!

As long as there are people to fight, i'll keep fighting in MTW as Well as RTW!

As Far as Medievil 3D goes i cant imagine it will be all that long until a full Mod of Rome is made to represent the medievil Period, simililar to Barocca's STW for MTW Mod.

agreed. I loved AoK to death - visited teh forums and palyed with my friends for hours with that game. Then AoM came out and it looked awesome, had amazing units and it seemed like it would be great as well, but the gameplay wasn't there for some reason. THe essence of the game had been lost and the Age of.. games suddenly seemed really arcadey. In these last few weeks before RTW comes out I am actually thinking about going back and playing a few games of AoK and AoM just to remember - but my new High Campaign as the English is also tempting. One thing I find neat is that the AoK community after AoM was released, rivalled eachother and there wasn't one that was exceedingly better. Sure AoM had more people but they were mostly temporary fans who left to go play other games as they were released - the AoK (and AoE ) fans stuck around long after AoM was released. One thing as a closing note - AoM has been in (or very close to) the Top Ten Sellers list for Computer Games ever since it was released, a month or so ago it was #3 or something. Now that's some awesome staying power ES has there in their games. I see the Total War Series in a very similar light.

MTW still has plenty to offer for me as I have'nt completed it yet . I need closure and thats just playing the English . I've then got to play a muslim faction , and then the byzantines , and then a real hard faction like the danes or turks and then on expert all over again .............. i think by the time I'm done with MTW there'll be a galactic total war on the shelves !!!!!!!!!

The transition from STW to MTW was different than what we are about to witness with RTW. With that in mind, consider this..

After playing MTW for years something hit me and the desire to be a Daimyo rather than a Sultan overcame me. Maybe it was that Last Samurai movie er something, can't recall. Anyway, even though I was fully addicated to this title long ago, I had a great deal of difficulty getting back into playing STW. It was nice to see the throne room again, and the whole Japanese atmosphere (music, icons, artwork, etc) aroused fond memories. It felt all good and there was peace in the universe.

But I couldn't help the nagging of several missing elements that to my surprise really diminished my gameplay. Fighting the same units, smaller maps, interface, missing siege warfare, etc. It's not like I forgot what the game was like. It really distrubed me as STW was some of my best gaming days.

MTW brought us to the otherside of the world and took the limits of STW and redefined them to huge levels. Refinements in almost every area, but it was infact the same engine. Lots was familiar just more of it and presented differently to reflect the new region or era.

RTW is a different fish. It's the same game yes, but it isn't. Is this for the better, most likely, but until we've had it for some time, and get the patches, we don't really know.

I guess it really depends on what you find of value in these TW games. Some people would sell souls for bleeding graphics, some just love the deep richness, or strategy of it all. What I mean to say is, if RTW does cut back on any of the elements that you really dig in MTW, your going to come back to it at some point. But if RTW takes everything and goes to the moon with it in all areas, well, guess I better find a spot on the space shuttle.

I agree too. I simply cannot feel enthusiastic about STW after having played MTW. The same will probably (hopefully) be the case with RTW.

so we have to play as much MTW now as we can, since there is no turning back.
