When you play it the first time, you don't know where the reinforcements come in, so like 999999999999999999 mongols will pop up behind your lines, unless you line the whole west coast with troops. It's impossible to know where to defend without foreknowledge.
After you have played it once, you know where and when the reinforcements come in, so you know exactly where to defend and then it becomes pretty easy.
It's kind of lame when the major challenge is enemies appearing out of no where.
The samurai campaigns, of course are neat.
