    Default Internet Radio

some of you, maybe even most of you, are familiar with this, but i thought i'd post a little something on it if you're not. as a starter, open up windows media player (prolly has to be wmp ver. 9). on the left you will see a button that sasys 'radio tuner'. click on it and wait for wmp to load some stuff up. eventually, you shld be presented with a short list of 'radio stations' that are playing over the internet. i'm not sure if microsoft is simply sponsoring a few of these or just included a few to get you started, but they do work.

click on one of them and it will expand that item's info. in that info box there shld be another couple of buttons you can click. one is for going directly to that site and another says 'play'. click on the 'play' button. if everything works, you shld be taken to that given site and the music shld start streaming. pretty cool.

i had a bit of trouble getting one or two of these to work, what with all the active x, cookies and other nonsense that they want to stick on your computer, but i did try out two and got them to working. it didnt cost a thing and i didnt even have to sign up for anything. again, i think this is because this is somewhat promotional through microsoft and they've enabled the play feature for you. not all net radio sites will allow this. some require that you sign up and some require that you pay, but for now, the wmp thing did work.

i'm currently listening to a classic rock station that plays favorite rock artists, but not necessarily their big hits. cool :) so far i've heard a stones tune, and a few others. and it just keeps streaming. you even get dj's, but havent heard any ads yet!

and, for those of you going, 'streaming feeds? i cant run those on my wimpy computer and wimpy internet connection!', why, there are even feeds for lower bandwidths, going all the way down to 28.8k.

so, give it a shot; commectial free radio is a good thing :) now, if i can just figure out a way to capture some of this ;)

It´s much simpler. With WinAmp v5, you can play internet radio just like any other source. Just open WinAmp, let it connect to it´s seerver, open the media library and click on "internet radio" on the left. After a short loading, you get a list of channels. Just doubleclick on one to begin playing. It´s handy to bookmark channels you like.

One of my favorite local college radio stations broadcasts over the net:

WITR - from RIT - Rochester Institute of Technology. Good mix of off-beat music.

winamp, eh? hmm, havent had that on my computer for a while. if you've got a link and some more info, post it up. if not, dont worry about it; i can google it. i think powerdvd will also do this, but havent played with it much, other than using it to play dvd's.

As I haven't lived in England for about ten years .So this is something I've used for quite some time now.
More often than not ,it's the news in English I go for.So BBC World ,is the one I most go for.
Btw.Down loaded the latest Yahoo messenger yesterday .And that's got quite a nice music feature. Not exactly radio ,but a nice blend of musical genres.
    That's it.
