    Default Still a great game

With RTW due out soon I traded my 6 gig 333 MHz Pentium II with 256 MB RAM in for a 80 gig, 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 with 1 gig RAM laptop.

Technically my old comp wasnt supposed to be able to run MTW VI MP, but it did.

Problem was that my hard drive wasnt big enuff to hold MTW and STW simultaneously. So with the new comp I loaded STW ME and MTW VI.

And when I fired up Shoggie I was pleasantly reminded of why I got into this whole thing. See I care little for Medieval history, but Sengoku Japan has always been of interest to me.

STW is really a lot simpler and cleaner than MTW. STW does a better job (for me anyway) of immersing me in the period. STW does lack some of the finer points that MTW has.

    But. . .

after 1000's of hours of STW play, followed by 1000's more of MTW, going back to STW was quite refreshing and very fun.

I guess the business reality for PC games is that we create, play, then quickly move on to a new creation. So STW MP has dried up, and there doesn't seem to be lot a support for patches and improvements.

STW is still a great game.

i like medieval time period better, MTW has more stuff, and yet in the last 2 years i've spend more hours on STW then MTW.

STW just has a better feel to it.
    Nice cut sinces.
    Better strategic AI.
    Flat tax rate.

i think in 5 years i'll be playing STW instead of MTW, or even RTW (not 100% on this one)

I grow learning the real time tactical game with STW.
The simple procedure to combine the scissor>paper>stone
has let all the games to be beautiful in their simple structure.
The timing, the control on the units, the 1 line yari...
It could be the moment(in my life), not the game itself, but
I will miss it...like old friends, once partner of many nights,
    and now gone.

A new king is here. Will be my king too? Dunno yet.
I am waiting a new master.

Um, there is something very immersive and atmospheric about STW. The battles, in particular, feel very evocative - in MTW, they were fine as a wargame but I did not really feel I was commanding impetuous knights, fanatical Muslim warriors or whatever. In STW, there is just a thrill of commanding your Samauri archers to draw swords and charge - it somehow evokes the period.

Where STW comes unsuck is the campaign map - there is much less variety and strategic possibilities.

Here's hoping RTW will take the campaign map even further but also bring back some of that great STW period atmosphere.

STW is a classic. MTW is nothing more than STW 1.5 with some superficial gameplay elements added. It is just a stopgap since they were still doing RTW.

Yep, STW is a modern work of art

I agree with ichi. I still play Shogy. And in both SP and MP, we played the game so intensely that we brought it to a level of planning and coordination similar to chess. I doubt that Rome will be studied in the same way.

The single reason for playing Medieval was the posibility to charge and somewhat better control on the battlefield.

Now that I have had RTW for over a week STW is still my favorite. Sadly I'm not able to play STW on my current computer becuase of a crash bug so I'm hoping for an STW mod for RTW :)
