    Default Mods and Historical Accuracy

    I was thinking the other day how great it would be to have an Age Of Empires style mod for the game that basically said hell to historical accuracy and just allowed for raw and diverse gameplay styles - e.g the Romans fighting the Sumerians. I do feel that too much emphasis can be put on historical accuracy and that it would be cool to have a game where you could really play some good what ifs like Japan vs Europe or the Greeks against the Egyptians and other AOE type scenarios.

    So what do you reckon? Would an Age of Total War mod be cool ? Obviously it'd be set more to the middle east than the current map to at least give it some geo-historical purchase but other than that the game would be more about gameplay with basic units like "Roman Legion" or "Spartans" rather than being too specific. I just think it might be nice to go back to a Shogun simple style of units for a change.

    And no, this mod wouldn't have any weird fantasy units like "mummys" as I've heard there will be in R:TW by the sound of things.

    Bravery is not to never feel the fear.
    Bravery is to be terrified as hell;
    But to hold the line anyway.

    I agree to certain extent. I really like Decimus's Fall of Rome Mod for MTW because it allowed you to play as the Romans past 476 AD if you could make it. Imagine Roman Legions going after French knights etc etc. One could even argue how different things would have been had the Romans survived. In a way its kind of like make believe. But then again, how accurate is MTW? Can you imagine the Scots taking over Europe? I would say it is fun playing the game and trying to recreate history rather than creating your own.

    That would definately be a cool mod idea. To be able to match up units that in real life may not have even known of eachother would be interesting.

    I think this would be particularly interesting if the focus of the mod were on the battles, rather than on the campaign. I imagine we're going to have the same MP options as in MTW, with a few slight variations.

    But it would be nice to include all of those what-ifs - such as the Mayans, Koreans, Chinese, far east units, African units, and be able to put them up against the Romans, the Greeks, etc.

    Not really. Such a game would be ridiculously unbalanced. the sumerians and japanese would be compeletly steamrolled by the European knights. The attempt at historical accuracy is what makes Total War several steps ahead of generic cookie cutter crap like Age of Empires. I thought that the ability to play as the minor factions and/or Arabs in Medieval was more than enough diversity.

    Now if you wanted to play a world wide version of total war, where everyone is operating based on the same time period, then I would endorse it.

Thou hast dared to mock me, and to question the power of Melkor, master of the fates of Arda. Therefore with my eyes thou shalt see, and with my ears thou shalt hear; and never shall thou move from this place until all is fulfilled unto its bitter end". -Tolkien
