Thread: Trade Route Question

    Default Trade Route Question

    I've been trying to setup a route from the byzantines to Italy/Hungary/Papal etc. I have a ship in every space making a trail from constantinople to italy, but I can only get any trade going between my state of naples and italy. Can someone give me a hand with this. Also do you need an alliance to trade, or what is the guide lines. Thx.

    The other requirement is that all the provinces in between have ports. The AI can be lax about building them but wait a while and they will be built.

    You Do Not Need An Alliance To Trade With A Function Never The Less You Can Not Trade With Function That You Are At War. The Trade Rout Will Brake If A Hostile Ship Is In The Same Area As Yours. On The Other Hand Trade Is Based On Production And Demand. May Be Your Goods Are Not Wanted In Some Providence So There Is No Trade Or They Trade The Particular Good With Some Other Function.

    Welcome to the Org guys

    You can press and hold the V key to see which sea ways are open access for your faction.
    If you can trace a green route from your province (with a port) to the province (with a port) that you want to trade with then there is no reason for not trading... unless your goods are not wanted!
    The other thing to note is that a Merchant in your province with a port will greatly increase your trade income and perhaps chances of trading????

    Pressing the V key will show you if you have an unbroken sea link between two provinces, and if it is being blocked by enemy ships.

    Sorry I'm not understanding. So if you have a line of ships going from the port in Italy to Constantinople, there needs to be ports built in Italy and Constantinople, or all provinces on the route?

    Ports need to be built in the provinces with trade goods. Without a port no sea bourne trade will occur. So no, not all provinces need the ports.

    in order to successfully trade from your Province A to another faction's Province B, several things have to happen:

    1. you should have a port in your province, and any level of a merchant building.
    2. Province B should have a port.
    3. you should have an uninterrupted line of ships from Province A to Province B.
    This may be as complicated as you like, as long as you can get from Province A to Province B only going through sea provinces and you have a ship in each of those sea provinces.
    4. you must not be at war with the faction that owns Province B.
    5. there must be no enemy ships in any of the sea provinces that constitute the path from Province A to Province B (i.e., no ships belonging to a faction you are at war with).
    6. at least one of the goods you're exporting from Province A are not found in Province B (i.e., Province B doesn't export them as well; if it does, you'll still have the trade route, you just won't be making any money from the export of your goods to Province B).

    Hey Bobby, Welcome to the Org!

    Certainly do not need ports in all provinces along a route.

    There are a few things that effect trade: trading posts/merchants buildings, ports, ships, and trade goods.

    You can check trade out by clicking on the stack of coins in the lower right. Hold the mouse over a province and you'll get a summary of income - click on a province that is trading and it will reveal additional details.

    Provinces have 3 kinds of trade: local trade, exports, and imports.

    A province with a port will import goods from allies.

    A province with a trade good, port, and trading post will export to a allied/neutral province when there is an uninterrupted line of ships between that province and an allied/neutral province with a port.

    Trading posts - Merchant - Merchant's Guild - Master Merchant: you can build these in provinces with trade goods. I try to keep this building constructed and then upgraded as soon as I can. Even without a port these buildings increase your local trade.

    Ports: Your provinces with ports can trade with allied and neutral faction (and rebel) provinces that have ports.

    Ships: others have mentioned the V key: red means that an enemy ship blocks is in that sea region - this would block any trade or movement by you in that region until they move out or you (or a storm) destroy them; I think yellow means you do not have a ship in that region but neither do any of your enemies; green means the sea region is capable of supporting your trade or movement.

    You only need 1 ship in a region to make it green, and additional ships do not increase trade or movement capacity. Ships have a maintenance cost each turn that increases with their distance to one of your ports.

    Trade goods: certain events in the game cause additional trade goods to appear in some provinces (Portugal and Antioch IIRC).
