A few months later, Adam called and asked me to help make a rehearsal hall pilot, and I did. Mike Loades and I sat at a table and functioned as colour commentators as a brave family of four fought the Battle of Crecy. Neither Mike nor I was convinced that the format would work until we saw the edited version of the pilot. Then, Mike says, he knew the concept had "legs".

While we were making the pilot, Mike Loades and I played against the machine. We just stood there with our arms crossed, little half-smiles on our faces, worked perfectly together, and GAWD it was boring for everyone else!
The lieutenants would come to us crying, "the English are slaughtering our Genoese crossbowmen!!". We'd say "So? They're paid for ..." and go back to standing quietly with our arms folded.
The game only becomes good television (and thus good teaching) when there's a team to watch; and we were NOT a team to watch!
