    Default Naval battles suck

How irritating is it to loose 6 caravels to a force of 10 dingys and longships? Pretty damn irritating! Naval warfare sucks in MTI:VI. ALthough this is the first time I've noticed just how bad it is, this is even worse than CIV. Hopefully it will be improved in RTW.

I wouldn't say it's that bad, I've had som pretty louse experiances with civ3.
One thing you hould know about naval battles is that if you win a land battle on the same turn you will automatically lose the naval one, no matter what however this works both ways ;)

Wait until you lose 3 carracks in a battle with 2 dromons, then you'll be truly annoyed.

In civ3 a galley sunk my nuclear submarine. Could someone please explain to me how a glorified rowboat can sink a nuclear sub.

This is what irritated me the most, but as you say, it works both ways, so I consider it acceptable exploiting this 'feature' by losing one peasant against a massive enemy army while your navy is sinking the complete enemy navy.
No, seriously, sometimes I exploit this cheat when I'm really after losing my entire navy --> when my navy is built up again it's time for revenge
(depends on how far I am on the campaign map though)

I remember good old original Civ with battleships and armour losing to a mere militia unit.

Nowadays I dont bother with higher tech ships. Just build a stack of the fastest (and cheapest) ships and use them as a hunter killer pack. Works for me and creates rank 6 admirals.

What happens exactly is the entire crew are asleep. They have also forgotten to close any of the compartment doors and the sub is drifting on the surface. The galley then rams the sub using the new improved titanium drill ram punching a hole in the side and thus sending the sub down to the bottom.

Now if someone could explain to me how my modern armour loses to spearmen?

They hold onto their shields really, really hard so the shells and bullets just bounce off. The spearmen then laugh derisively at the tank crews, calling them rude names, waving their manparts & baring their fundaments until the taunting causes the tank unit to charge, falling into the cunningly concealed pits to be savaged by wild pigs and wardogs.

BTW - that 'naval bug' - i've never experienced that - VI naval combat is a bit random, and it generally seems to rely more on admiral star rating than types of ships involved. Generally what happens when you declare war on a faction with a big navy like yours is you'll get lots of naval actions in one go - some lost, some won - I don't believe that that bug exists, its just bad luck/poor admirals in your campaigns.

I found a way (I think) around this bug. If you don't engage the enemy on land, and don't do anything to declare war, AND the navy you are about to attack belongs to a faction that is at war with 2 other factions, then the outcomes of naval encounters seem normal and you don't atually end up being at war with them (don't ask, I can't explain. Using 2.01 VI, but I've assaulted the French navy as the Byz 3 years in a row and sent them all to the bottom without any odd fights and for some reason even though I've gutted their navy they are not at war with me).

When the war began it was fairly even- loose some win some. I can live with that. The imbalance occured, as was said, when I was taking 'my land' from the large Danish armies (who were squatting on it).

You mean burning wild pigs, of course?

If you, for one turn, have neither ships nor provinces adjacent to any enemy power's ships or provinces, you will cease to be at war with them.
