    Default STW/Warlord Edition - for a fiver!

    Hi all,

just been shopping. As per thread title, I've picked up WE for a fiver, which was a surprise as PCW prices can generally be beaten by the online shops.

What I wanted to ask about was this. It's packaged by "Sold Out Software" and comes with something called NOW technology (TM), which "installs relevant game files" (like there were irrelevant ones to begin with??), "displays your player guide and provides comprehensive offline support". The box also says patches and updates, where available, are also included. I've not done the install yet but I hope to be back to post my thoughts on what I find.

The other thing is that I have the old STW, patched to v1.11 on my system. I've had a problem with castle assault battles giving me CTD at the split second where the castle first comes into view. This is a real pain because the larger castles need to be properly captured to stop them from being degraded at the end of a siege. I'm hoping this isn't some inherent disagreement between my gfx card and castle textures in the game because it might mean that WE will suffer the same problem.

Other than that, is it technically possible to have STW Classic and STW/WE installs on a system at the same time? (HDD space is not a problem).

    TIA

    EYG

    That's cheap EatYerGreens,

Last time I saw it here it was still over $20.

You can install both. Install STW and make a (Windows) copy of the entire directory (leave that classic). Then install STW WE into the original classic install.

    Hi Tosa,

it's a good job you explained that as I would have expected this to install as a full Shoggy game in its own right, only in a directory path of my choice. You make it sound like it is an expansion pack and expects the buyer to have a copy of STW already in place?

Like I said, it's a specially packaged item, not an original EA box. I ought to check their website to see what to expect, before I break the shrink wrap.
(was going to include the link but not sure if it's on the approved list...)

Incidentally, while I was there (picking up a UPS was the main reason for the trip), I also got MTW and VI. Spoilt for choice now but got a lot of installs to plod through.

I may only get a week to try them before RTW reaches these shores. (sigh)

Oeps, sorry EatYerGreens. What I described is related to STW classic with STW Mongol Invasion.Warlord Edition is classic and the expansion bundled together. I'm not having real experiences with that one, but I guess the result is the same as installing MI over classic: you lose the original exe and can't play classic anymore.

STW WE is also classic, but not completely: you can't play without Naginata cavalry, Battle field Ninjas or Kensai. And the units are a bit different balanced.

If that's you, Tosa, you've got the wrong hat on ;)

I haven't got as far as the install yet, fortunately. I'm still wondering how the copy directory trick would work. It wouldn't be a proper 'install' as far as XP was concerned though I guess it would still be run-able using a custom shortcut?

The extra units sound interesting, though I'm more likely to fall victim to them than to be able to afford the things for myself Since I still have STW1.11 on my older PC, I could easily uninstall it completely from the new one (thus fixing the crash in castle assaults problem) and replace it with STW:WE for a completely new game experience.

Since I've splashed out on MTW and VI too, I take it the various installs should all sit comfortably alongside one another?

    Hello EatYerGreens,

The Admin account had to be created to setup this board. So, Admin is used by TosaInu now (I intended to put it in the fridge, but something wasn't working).

I understand you have the Warlord Edition? You don't have to copy them. If you have classic + MI. Just make a copy of the classic directory, it won't be a proper install for the OS (I'ld say it is proper, for the nosey PC shouldn't know which games you have), you can still run it and use drag and drop (right mouse) on the exe to create a shortcut on the desktop.

All installs sit comfy next to each other. In fact, you can even make copies of the same title (important for playing mods, testing versions).
