It will not run if you have CD emulation or virtual drives installed. You must uninstall all of them before you can run the game (as was my case).

It uses securom v2.9. It installs with alcohol in place and can be played from an image on a virtual drive.

It will also not load the game if you have it installed and have the emulation software installed. .Makes me wonder if this kind of action is legal to do so, looks like CA insists on letting us play with our cd's in our cd rom drives.
Well it's just to easy to copy the CD's if there wasn't any copy protection. Just borrow the CD's from a friend, install it and you're done. Because yes, securerom v2.9 is a copy protection. (Note that there are games that don't require the CD-rom ever once they are installed)
I'm positive they don't have a deal, alcohol just keeps up with the protection. While publishers will always try to protect their games, people will always find a way to circumvent it. I'm not sure of the legallity, but I think you can do almost anything with your own copy, save things that put it in other people's hands (like hosting the images, giving discs with the game on it, etc). But the license agreement sheds more light on this.
Copy protection of this is a bit of a necessary evil: you don't want much piracy, so you put some mechanism in play that unfortunately give buyers a bit more trouble. I like the protection, at least CA will get more money (because of a bit less piracy) and that's good to me, since they can go on and make more games

The benefit to not using the physical CD is not just the hassle of maintaining the CD in one of the physical drives or the benefit of reducing the risk of damage while moving the disks around. I've also found that the earlier TW games tended to have a (securom) glitch while starting the program that required me to reboot (when using older OS's) and which I dont have from the image.pfft. as if any of you are playing any other cds with RTW out. :)
My DVD/CD drive gets very hot after a while (most of the heat I think is coming from the hard drive below it), and CDs tend to cook if left too long in the drive. So much so that some DVDs refuse to play if the machine has been on for some time.
This is the main reason I do not like protection schemes based on having the CD in the drive - if the CD gets damaged (over heating etc), you're basically stuffed.
