Imperial Total War next... Do you agree?

Hello, CA, friends.

Reading many threads on the forum I see that CA are debating NTW (already mod for MTW, for those who aren't familiar it's napoleonic total war) an American War version or MTW2. Now, rather than being boring and going for MTW2, which is what we already have seen, CA could combine the first two, with many more features, to make Imperial Total War, which would cover a time period from around 1492 (why? Well, the Imperial Age really started with the discovery of the Americas, and there would be an almighty race to get the americas first) to about 1837/1900/something like that (when there weren't really any more colonial wars, or european wars to say the same) It will take place around the entire world, as an ntw version really wouldn't work without colonisation being a very very big part of it. For this to work there should also be naval battles included, as at that time a navy could have probably been considered more important than an army (except in the early or late stages or generally for factions like the Austro-Hungarians or the Ottomans). As it includes the whole world then it would be a big project. There would be many regions etc. (this was done in RoN remember) and maybe the natives could be represented by rebels, some maybe even having their own factions. Events like the American Revolution could take place, to add even more to the joy.

It would take a while, even if it used the RTW engine with a few changes, eg naval battles, but I think it would be worth it. Who is with me?

I have seen a thread like this before, maybe some of the other have too and just aren't bothered in answering again (even I just reply because I've seen all the other threads so far today ).

I'd like Medieval 2 better. It just seems like the nicest piece of history. And I would LOVE 'Fantasy; Total War', but that's just because I love fantasy . They would have to include flying units in that though, since what's fantasy without flying creatures?
After these two, I place your Imperial, Total War. It's nice, but the other two I would just like better. Seeing as they probably won't make Fantasy;TW, it's Medieval 2 I'm hoping on of the 3 mentioned in your post and on the boards.

Well, who knows. I would have thought China Total War was what everyone wanted, but CA aren't going to do that (I think they could afterwards) are they?

It would be so good- you could send explorers out to find new lands, and without stepping too far into Civ 3 could even make it so that unexplored areas have a random area of terrain.

Once again, I think CA will have a hard time deciding. MTW 2 is at the no. 2 spot on my list, and I really doubt CA are gonna make a 'Fantasy: Total War' It just doesn't really suit the TW series IMO.

I think it's a very good idea, and it's in my top-5 wishlist now But I'd rather see a MTW2 first, as the mediaeval times are my "favourite". As I've posted already several times in other threads, I'd like to see a sort of "Conquistador TW" too, which would fit perfectly in your wider Imperial TW.

Well, maybe CA could do with ITW and MTW2 what they did with MTW and STW, you know, starting both at the same time but releasing one earlier to give people time for the other.

I also believe that an MTW2 would have to have naval battles as well, that being a sort of compromise.

I think that the real war is much more exiting than see a pair of dragons kill your men...

is much better look a pair of Grenadiers killing your divisions of Dragones del Rey!!!

Or a Divisions of incan Chasquis, ambushing your troops in a deep forest like Brazil...

Or look in action a regiment of legendary Jenizarii cut in pieces a Austrian Dragons in the Siege of Wien!!!

Ah, glad to see another fellow Imperialist.

To be worthy of the title of 'Next TW game' MTW2 would have to undergo some huge changes from the original, e.g. it should cover asia as well, that played a big role in the medieval period, it should have naval combat, kings should have ratings which actually affect that faction's AI, so on.

But really, ITW would have much more new. There could be ships assaulting castles, you first taking your troops to take control of Jamaica, and lots more.

I didn't vote because their isn't really an option that suited me.Making them a little more varied would probably have gotten you a bigger response.

Personally i always hope they keep firearms and artillery out of the series on that scale as the the whole crux of the total war series as i see it is melee combat and the rush you get when two armies clash together in the middle of a battlefield.I feel that the addition of the above will reduce the battles to long range bombard fests and would also render the seiges much less involved.
I also hope that the naval aspect of the series plays very much second fiddle to the land battles for the above reasons.A fact i was glad to see in Rome TW.
To be honest i would begin to lose interest in the series if it began to diversify in that way.If you had had an option for Medieval 2 then i would have selected that option as in my opinion the medieval period is the richest time period for the producing of a game of this nature.

Anyway this is my first post here so hello everyone and congratulations on making this THE website to visit when wishing to discuss all matters total war.

Well, just look at the Warhammer tabletop game (I don't play it myself, but a friend does, and I have played a few battles with his stuff). A battle there isn't packed full dragons either. You need alot of points and such that only big battles can have dragons, and then only few.
The game is like the TW series that flanking, armor etc all matters (and it costs points (equivalent to money in TW) to add them).

Admitted, the scale is usually a bit smaller, you'll never get 1000 miniatures in a game (well, you do have another warhammer game with smaller minis, but I forgot the name), but that's also because it's quite impossible to have thousands of miniatures on a taletop setting (keeping the units large enough for some detail).

But yeah, I'd like to see if they can pull this (a Fantasy;TW) off.

Really, after 2 new total war titles the west has been getting all the attention, i think its time to go back to the east where the series begun!!

It should include all of asia first and foremost, and maybe arabia!!
It would be huge, from basically the beginning of chinese imperialism to about the medieval times.

Imperial total war sounds good to me, infact its second on my wish list.


Third would be something i've been thinking about for awhile but seems too complicated so its less likely that they'll even think about it but..

Basically World total war, from the beginning of civilizations, to like the discovery of america or farther.
Of course its a little too , but hey a guy can dream can't he?

While it doesnt sound too bad, havent you noticed that your fighting mostly natives? How fun is that truly going to be? Everyone knows the Aztecs and Incas were completely masscared by the Cortez, and that there were very, very few native victors. The Zulu being one, but that was just one victory. This would be total war, this would be total masscare. Unfair fight!

Listen, CA are debating NTW and american civil war and MTW2, so really Imperial Total War (a combination) or MTW2 are the only options. Maybe a China Total War can come after.

About fighting natives, it would be easy to stop this from happening. E.g, they could make it so that you win by conquering your own continent, and everything else just improves your armies and economy, as well as being able to attack enemy armies in that region of the world.

You could have parts of the map invisible, which only become visible when you send an explorer to an already visible area and he discovers it on the way, and for the further regions there would be a chance of success, as well as a very small chance of actually uncovering where you want to go (e.g. you've uncovered america and southern asia, so you want to uncover australia by travelling to america via the pacific, but your explorer may die or go a different route.

Well, I feel that an Imperial Total War would be superb...building a map of the entire would prove to be a long and difficult process but ultimately worth the while. However, if the campaign started roughly at the beginning of the Rennaissance and ended after the Franco-Prussian War/ Civil War then it would have to be very objective based for each faction i.e. Playing as the British would require you to gain specific territories by the end of the campaign...and the Spanish would have to Discover the New World before the American Factions were put into play...it would have to be a discovery based game for most factions in the beginning and then work its way into actual Imperialism by the end. Certain Factions would have to break apart into their own factions because of events...unless you counter act it in someway OR essentially it would have to be a bunch of mini campaigns going on at the same time...relevent to each faction of course and if you complete your objective...or loosely complete your objectives by a certain year you are suddenly thrust into an entirely different campaign but playing as the same faction. Well my 2 cents anyway

I think that instead of just another total war game covering europe, and nowhere else, or any other continent for that matter (which would honestly be wrong) this idea would be great. We could have the option of choosing exactly where we could take as a colony, and you never know who else could come and land on a remote pacific island that is close to yours! It could even be the turks.

And I think, that by sending spies into enemy's capitals, you could find maps of their colonies and stuff and steal them, to save your spy having to go all the way across the pacific/atlantic/whatever. I am not trying to dictate this to CA, but there could be a multitude of non-european factions to play as, some who do not have any decent shipping boats and must conquer their continent, whilst staving off attacks from the incoming swedes, or whatever.

Anything would be possible people. Think. This would be a complete change from all the other Total War games. One that can only be much more enjoyable.

And to keep firearms out of the game... Why? People still fought with horses, partisans, pikes, halberds (just loads of polearms) as well as cavalry, and cannons. You would play a different kind of battle yes, but it would still be very exciting to see unlucky soldiers getting shot down, or a cavalry charge going wrong when a cannon ball rams into it and knocks down the entire centre. And ships, firing hell into each other and seeing the walls getting smashed through by cannons, and the people inside knocked down. And then there's the boarding...

I think Technology should progress as you mandated it. Your civilization might start out at the bottom of the barrel tech wise(I.E. Native American and Lower African Countries) but based on how you research and exploit different technologies across the world...or shared secrets from close allies you could virtually create your own fully customized armies starting with just Zulu Warriors that carry spears in the beginning and judging on how well you persuade the technology your Spear Wielding Warriors could end up carrying muskets and wearing completely different clothing without taking everything away from their original qualities. Some more barbaric cultures would look down upon technological advancement as a threat and might rebel but it would be well worth the risk in trying to face early technological giants like the European Factions. If you've ever played Super Power or when Super Power 2 comes out, basically the game represents every country in the modern world, and other countries judge you based on economic/Political/Military prowess. The same concept mixed with real time battles and very sophisticated mapping system like the Total War Series has set from the Age of Discovery to beginning of the Industrial Revolution would create a very well diversed game with an impossible number of outcomes. Remember World Domination(especially in those ages) would not be an easy task, so it would probably be wiser to have loose set objectives for each faction (possibly into the hundreds) while still maintaining an ever so slight focus on world domination. I think it is about time that CA starts broadening its horizens

Silver Rusher, much as I applaud your enthusiasm and some of your suggestions, I have voted against your ITW. As I have argued in previous posts, any new game should respect the classic unity of time, place and action in order to be both satisfying and playable. There is no way that CA or any other company could develop a strategy map plus war engine capable of emcompassing anything from Aztecs to Chinese Boxers, any spot from the Baring Sea to Tierra Fuego, and any type of navy from caravels to dreadnoughts. However, a game focusing on the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, i.e. covering a period from the early eighteenth to the early nineteenth Century and ending prior to the period of colonisation, might just be feasible. As for CA, I guess they are waiting to see what Pyros come up with in their soon to be released game Imperial Glory. I suggest we do the same.
