    Default Protectorate bugged?

I just made the Gauls a protectorate but they took a little more money than what was agreed to..
I offered 12,000 and demanded that they became a protectorate. They accepted. This caused my treasury to drop from 119,000 to 107,000. So far everything was fine. Then I pressed the end turn button and saw my treasury drop to 22,000. WTF? They took 85,000 too much??
BTW, yes I know I didn't miss-type and gave them an annual fee, I saved just before and tried it several times.
I also know for sure it's the protectorate that somehow took my money because I double-checked by NOT making them a protectorate and sure enough; the next turn I had 123,000 denari, not 22,000.
Can someone shed some light on this please?

What does the financial overview say of that year? If it lists 97k for diplomacy, then there is a bug or something we are overlooking.
My bet is that the Gauls have 85k debt, which you need to cough up to make them able to do anything. Not sure about it, but it seems the only reason I can think of.

I posted this at the TWC forums as well where I uploaded two screenshots of the end-turn report. One is from the turn after I've made Gaul a protectorate and one is from when I didn't. Those 85,000 seems to have just vanished into thin air...

Am i missing something here? Your screenies show a treasury total of 124,044 denari with no bribe, then 111,954 with bribe, a difference of 12,090. It's slightly off because your farm income and corruption varied slightly each time. Farming income can vary from poor harvest to excellent harvest, for each city.

edit: my bad, see it now. weird

Look at the right lower part of the screens. The second turn, it shows only 22k in the treasury.

You should really experiment a bit to see what effects it. So try offering more money to become proctorate, does this decrease your money by that amount?
Try to look at the financial rating of all factions too. Did your rating drop? Did the Gauls one increase?

On a sidenote: somehow the end turn finance NEVER matches your starting money of the turn. It's always a bit off. I wonder what causes this, because this might also be the case here (but the discrepancy is somehow enlarged here for some reason)
    Anyone else have thoughts?

My first thought was the same as Soulflame's, if you check the financial info comparison before making them a protectorate, does it show gaul as having a really awful financial state?

Ok I checked the financial section and the Gaul had around 20,000 denari, which was more than many other factions had.
Now, the turn right after they became protectorate their graph has went up 12,500 points while mine has decreased by the roughly the same amount.
The turn after that however (and now things get interesting!) their graph has incresed by 85,000 while mine has decresed by that amount. So there's no doubt they actually got my money somehow. A couple turns after this I even got a pop-up box saying the Gaul now were the richest...
So what's up with this? Is it a bug? A standard 85,000 fee for protectorates? What?

I'm fed up with their dishonest attitude so I think I'll just wipe them out instead.

I experienced similiar results when the senate required me to force Germania to be my protectorate. First time through they agreed if I gave them a lump sum of 50,000 and 200 for 10 years. Well, it turned out that I was losing 50,200 EVERY year! So I reloaded a previous save and got them to agree to a lump sum of 24,000. The first year went fine, then the next I lost ONE MILLION. ONE MILLION!

I was so pissed that I went back to a previous save and launched an attack on the Brutii, and am amassing a large army by Rome. The senate was getting awfully demanding anyway...

That's a beauty of a bug! Looks like you just handed them a blank check.

So the trick is to become weak and be a protectorate yourself for a short time

Then turn around 10 years later and send them a big fat thank you
