It applies to sea battles too. Unfortunately the only sea battle that I had large enough to qualify was a Greek(my faction) defeat.

Yupp, someone else said this too, seems like a nice little feature.

Got three of those already and it is only 250-something. I think you can get it when you win with a Heroic Victory, but not all though.

No, only sufficienty large battles are needed. I got an average defeat(at sea) and it was still a famous battle. It involved at least ten ships each side though.

So 1 unit of cavalry against 1 unit of hastati is a huge battle?

I thought that that battle I had was kind of cheesy for being marked historical but I guess it factored in that my 1 unit of reenforcemnts never arrived and it was still won. It was my generals unit of about 50 men aganst 161 hastati. I did'nt want to risk killing my general and I did'nt want a loss either so I waited for the timer and no reenforcements and when 3 mins hit I charged them and killed them all. luckilyy for me the charge never los its momentum and it was a downhill charge

Theres multiple factors that make it a famous battle. I guess if it's huge gamewise it will be a historical battle.

It's the little touches that make for an immersive experience.
    Sid Meyer understood that.
    That's it.

It's the troops involved as a proportion of both factions' total power, the absolute number of troops and the scale of the victory that make it a 'historically important' battle.
Gentlemen should exercise caution and wear stout-sided boots when using the Fintry-Kyle Escape Apparatus. Ladies, children, servants and those of a nervous disposition should be strongly encouraged to seek other means of hurried egress.

I've yet to see one myself but my flatmate got one & its a great little touch :D

Oaty, thats a 2:1 outnumbered battle with an all or nothing, last ditch charge & 100% enemy casualties
Pretty impressive from that viewpoint. Especially if you only had a few units at the time.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...
