    Default Immitation Legionnaires

Well seeing as I can only play the campaign map part of the game right now (graphics card cant take battles) I havent been able to use any of the awesome units. I went into custom battle and took a look at all the units though. And I noticed that the Numidians had these black dudes called "Immitation Legionnaires" or something to that effect. Thier in blue with a blue scutum. I'm wondering has anyone used these dudes yet? And whats the difference between them and regular Legionnaires. Also, how do you get them and are they historically accurate?

The Seleucids have Silver Sheild Legionaries. Which is basicaly a group of pretend legionaires. Not too fond of them seeing as you can get silver sheild phlanx as Selu

Actually from what i've heard, they are pretty much the same except that the immitation Legionnaries can't use the torturie formation. But in the game, it said they're not as strong, so i don't know.
No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making other bastards dying for their country.

Not true silver shield legionaries can do testudo formation. Did a custom battle this afternoon as the seleucids to see what the SS legion was made of.

I recall reading somewhere that historically the Numidians employed "legions"-- but that the men were lightly armored, lacked discipline, and depended heavily on their javelins. Basically light infantry drawn into a legion-style battle order.

At least that's what the one historian thought. I have no idea how they are depicted in RTW.

Both Armenian and Numidian Legionnaires are almost the same stats and can't form testudo. I haven't tried the spanish scutarii wich are supposed to be some sort of very early legionnaires, but i think the best imitation legionnaires are the seleucid ones.

    From the guidebook:

Armenian and Numidian Legionnaires have the same stats as Principes but cost more and have good stamina.

Seleucid Silver Shield Legionnaires are the "real deal" - same stats and everything as post-Marian Legionnary cohorts. However, they cost less to recruit (680 cf 720) but more to maintain (260 vs 210).

Legionary cohorts cost 740, not 720. Preatorian cohorts cost 810 and urban cohorts cost 860.

I wonder if the discrepancy is due to unit size? The guidebook is talking about units of 41 for the legionary cohort (seems rather small); what size are you playing with?

I don't have the game yet, but hope the guidebook is not wrong as the unit info is about all there is of any worth in it.

    I'm playing with the default, I think it's large. It's 81 or 82 units, I'm not sure.

If it is because of size, it's weird that half the size if 20 denarii less.

Numidian legionares take 2 turns to build and can't do the tortoise formation. Otherwise, they are pretty much normal legionares. I only recently started being able to use them in my Numidian campaign, but they really help, as Numidia lacks decent infantry.

Some Governors get retinue characters that give discounts to unit training costs. So that could be another explanation for the discrepancies you're reporting in training costs (i.e. maybe you got the figures from looking at a city with such a governor).

Nope. I specifically looked for a province without such a governor. I can easily compute it anyway as Roman peasants are 100 and you could easily find your discount by looking at the price for Roman peasants. My capital has a 30% discount, I think.
