Or simply just disband them outside the settlement. I like to use them as fodder if I don't have any small town I'd like to populate-- keep the enemy busy with the peasants while the real troops flank and pincer, or just have them absorb arrows/javelins. It's a real underhanded tactic, but useful in a pinch.

Sadly that doesn't seem to work - when disbanded in a region the old recruits seem to run for the area's city rather than simply hanging around in the countryside. It makes things a lot more expensive and difficult.

I did something I don't think anyone else has done, that is take the peloponnese and then make massive and fast war into Italia Siciliaque. Result? All of the romans except the julii beaten in 3 turns. The julii held a fe regions in Gallia which I took in 2 turns.

Oh..... so you don't really need to reach a settlement to disband then! It will make populating Dumatha so much easier.

By the way, what happens if you disband a unit in another faction's territory?

I dont think you can disband a unit if its not in 1 of your regions

I'm not sure that's true..... I'm pretty sure I've disbanded [mercenary] units deep in enemy territory before.

Hmmm yeh I'm quite sure I may have disbanded Mercs in enemy regions before but I'm also quite sure in a recent campaign I wasn't able too.

Maybe it was something changed in 1 of the patches.......only 1 way to find out, time to test

Honestly?! That's quite amazing. The Sicilian house cleaning is easy enough, but when i tried to take Capua on turn 5 (with Hanno and his army + mercenaries) I bumped into the Senate and got utterly crushed.
I'm not sure about Peloponnese, you surely don't mean pushing into Greece early on do you?

Well, even a fraction of their numbers is still quite a large number-- let's assume that each peasant unit has 120 men, and there are twenty of these units. EVen if only 20 men got shot before a unit routed, that's something like 400 men. A lot of javelins/arrows. I don't go out of the way to buld them-- they are just extras, so any advantage I can glean from them I perceive as a bonus already.

    Thats stupid. (No offense).
I wait in the my sicilian territory; building up a huge army, until the scipii attack the greeks. When the greeks are driven away, Thats when i decare war on the Scipii. That way (when i wipe scipii out) I control the whole of sicily; and i dont have to make war on greece. I become their allies instead and then destroy Brutii leaving only SPQR and Julii left.

That is a good strategy as the scipii always attack greece. I don't see the point of allying with them though.
