I've had some awesome battles and there is nowhere in the menu or in the book for that matter on how to save them

What mode is this in? If it's in the campaign there is currently no way to save them.
In other modes they can be saved from the detailed battle statistics screen at the end of battle. Look in the bottom left corner of the after battle window.

Yeah that sucks you cant save them in campaign mode. Can't think of why they would take that out since all I ever play is campaign.
