    Hello and welcome!

If your having trouble with the battles you may want to practice your skills on the custom battle map. This game can be a little bit overwhelming if you are new to the total war genre. Try reading up on the stratagies here at the org and on other websites. With some practice and a little armchair time you'll be letting other newcomers in on your new stratagies.

Just try the battles on easy and use the pause lots and you should be fine. :)

I beg to differ. Use of pause will slow your reflexes and 'easy' makes your troops more powerful than those of the enemy, thus reducing the need for tactics.

To become good at the game you need to practice. Try custom battles at normal difficulty on flat ground and forget about the upgrades. That makes the battles more simple and thus easier to keep track off. Take two identical armies and practice some simple maneauvres. If you win, try something else. If you lose, view the replay to see where it went wrong.

As soon as you feel more confident, start experimenting with upgrades (experience mainly, the others are not that important) and making the computer's armies stronger. Eventually, you should be able to take on armies twice your size with slightly superior troops.

Use of pause is a moot point. Though it is not realistic, you cannot execute 'programmed' maneuvres like a real general can, so pausing to give orders is not that unrealistic. Nonetheless, I recommend using it as little as possible, because it is highly addictive and can ruin your gaming experience. Consider changing the pause button if clicking on it becomes a reflex.

Lol, i like this one :D

For me, pause is not a problem. Sure i use it a lot, but that has its reasons. In a real battle, you do not have to instruct your troops all the time personally, as you have a complete command hierarchy, and your task is to set the general strategy, while they carry out individual tactical moves.

In Total war, if you leave a troop standing, the enemy can walk peacefully around it, and attack its flank, with the troop doing nothing at all.

In MP its another story, as the opponent has the same limitations you have.

From some of the comments, i got the impression, that in the eyes of some, the usage of pause makes one a 'lower quality player'.

All in one, i don't think, that using 'pause' makes someone a less worthy player than someone who plays without it.. Sure playing without pause means, you can react to events in real time, but if you are playing to get good reflexes, and point-precision in clicking, you would most probably play some kind of FPS game, instead of a strat.

Let's just say: if someone intends to play in MP, then practicing the game without using pause may be a good idea. Otherwise its just another feature you can either use or not use depending on your taste.

Other than that, im all for those who are against 'easy' difficulty.

Combat, especially against the AI is not that hard, once you get a grip of the way combat is done in the game. Read trough a few guides about basic tactics, like flanking, cavalry usage, etc, etc, and long before you realize what you are doin' you'll be crushing armies 2x 3x the size of yours.
