Does anyone else feel extremely lucky?

Does anyone else feel extremely lucky that in the year 2004 we can be playing an epic tactical RTS with a campaign nearly as in depth as a CIV game with the graphics of some of the earlier top of the line FPS games in the past 6 years?

Is anyone else getting tired with the over the top drama queens saying they payed for a BETA test, when ultimately this game will win strategy game of the year, and if it wasnt for an overhyped certain game, would EASILY win GOTY, and still may?

Bugs aside, I havent FELT this way about single player game since, probably 1994 with a certain game called X-Com or UFO Enemy Unknown for our European friends that you may recall. The fact that I am ranking this game up near Xcom, which I consider plainly to be the best video game ever made speaks volumes.

So are there bugs? There sure are, but Xcom had bugs, and oh boy was it fun to make them scream.

I feel both lucky and unlucky. Lucky that TW series was invented. Unlucky that it wasnt invented in the 1950's or 1700. Imagine what we would have now. Full units in vitual reality and insane realism.

Amen, brother Osbot. Definately the best strategy game ever. Easily game of the year so far for me. Sure it has a few little things that need fixing, but they will just make a great game even greater.

Shame there are so many trying to turn it into Rome: MTW. I hope they don't change movement/killing speeds etc too much in future patches. I love it as it is.

I haven't felt this great about a game since....well since I bought MTW earlier this year.

Rome isn't as good, but its still a great game, especially after you put in the fixes.

I agree Osbot, single-player this is a groundbreaking, remarkable game. The MP lovers have a lot more to deal with, best wished to them. I know my own love of the game is due to the fact that the campaign and SP battles are the game to me, never did have any good MP experiences with Shogun or Medieval.

... and I feel lucky that these games are so damned moddable, and the mod community just keeps growing. We've already got our OWN fixes for many of the complaints folks have... and with people already craving a MTW2, there's sure to be a mod in the works soon. Same with NTW I'll bet.

There's probably even some new tricks with this engine that will allow some innovative modder to do something really original, I hope so.

I've been a lurker in the community since STW and for all it's passion about what it doesnt like about this game, and all of it's passion about what it does like, I'm sure there will be many great things ahead.

All CA really needs to do is address the AI/pathing/group movement type bugs and we can put in more of the "preferences" changes ourselves.

... oh and hopefully campaign map MP is only one "generation" of the Total War series away! Something to look forward to.

I play all kinds of multi player games. If it has multi I play it. If I don't play RTW multi its not the end of the world for me. I bought RTW for the SP game not multi. If can get my competitive fix from FPS or other games. I havent tried RTW multi yet. However im sure the general community can come together with a set of mods most people will use. I know if a couple of my buddies get it, i'll have them get a couple speed mods and we'll have a ball.

I also bought RTW to play the single-player campaign in the first place, but I would be disappointed if the multiplayer part of this great game would prove to be a let down.
But so far it's all fun and happiness as I only played a few hours on the main map and haven't experienced any of those annoying bugs yet

Yes, I feel extremely lucky. I enjoyed S:TW, loved M:TW and this game is so much more and in my most favorite period. I've seen all the carping about killing speed and movement speeds, but to me, the game feels fine.

I'm playing my first long camp as Scipii, probably somewhere in the middle game (trashed Carthage, eliminated Numidia) and was just thinking today about how so many things that used to sort of bug me about the series have been fixed. As one example, the marvelous city icons that go under the names. I no longer have to page from city to city to city, I can just look and see at a swift glance what's going on and where I need to give attention.

Or the way they've given us provinces AND terrain we can use on a strat level. Or the way ships/trade works or the fact that they fixed ammo so that I don't need to MOD ammo for archers/siege engines to give them a llittle more.

I only play SP. Never have liked MP much. Only time I do MP is with a friend from the Left Coast playing Halo. I did play Halo for a while on my own and when the players are good, it's fantastic fun, but more often than not there are just to many lame griefers, just like there seem to be in any other game I've tried.

I feel immensely greatful for all the hard work CA did and how much they obviously listened to us carp and moan.

I agree 100% I haven't been this psyched about a game since Steel Panthers in 1995. In the r4ecent past, I've been terribly let down by Pax Romana, Legion and Warlords 4. Probably what I've been playing the most is Civ 3. Never any fps's (not my bag). But I've bought (not played) STW and MTW. Just felt like supporting a company that could make games like that. Wanted Rome all along.

Are there bugs? Maybe. I haven't seen them. Or don't care about them. Or they don't affect me.

In any event it doesn't matter; I have not seen a game this seamless (in terms of the blend between tactical and strategic) ever. I love the fact that I can auto resolve battles if need be. If I feel like playing out the battle, well....I'm amazed at the quality.

Yeah, chalk me up in the happy camper column.

Lucky.. well, I do have 5 lucky four-clovers (I used to had 7, but I have 2 to people in the past... still got 5 more to give ).
But yeah, the game is nice. There are some things that should have been better (naval battles stand out as first, the not-being-able-to-throw-pila are two), but overall it's one of the best games ever. The 3D graphics make it all more real and really give me the feeling I'm envelloped in ancient, strategic battles. Plus there is always something on the horizon, so you need to stay focussed.
SP is the main importance for me, but I would have liked to test myself against other humans, so I am a but disappointed with the MP, but until it's fixed, I have plenty of factions left to try

Well, if they are charged when they throw pila... you can scrape them from the ground, so I usually (in fact almost exclusively) use the alt-right click to attack...

RTW is still rough around the edges and there are several weaknesses.

For instance: Despite the new siege options and features, the battles in Medieval: TW took longer, required more skill and rewarded well thought play more.

In Rome, I usually rout them and they have like 1-2 survivors all the time. Just rush them, CTRL-A and klick a unit. I could enter from two sides in a Siege, but why, I can bash them frontal as they are.

The Paper-Scissors-Stone Principle of Rome is often near to non-existant.

I enjoy playing Rome, it is overall better than MTW, mainly due to the strategic map.

But the tactical battles suffered, and do not tell me the units look really much better than in MTW from a distance.

Tactical Battles have been sped up and dumbed down! Hiding in woods is now an art due to the fact that you hardly see your own units e.g. - Spearmen vs Cav, Cav vs Infantry, Infantry vs Spearmen and such things are rather weak and unimportant compared to MTW, as many units spear boni do not seem to work in RTW.


The building options are basically that of MTW - and I do not see a heck of a strategy there involved compared to Civ3 e.g.

I feel as lucky as an un-beheaded turkey the day after Thanksgiving. I was seriously jonesing for some Roman action, and CA has more than filled the fix for this junkie.

Call me nutty, but I don't entirely miss the 2-hour slugfests from MTW. I remember when the Golden Horde would show up, and I'd just shut the computer down for the night, knowing I would need an entire evening just to deal with their onslaught. Even getting my ass kicked took longer in that game.

And I have to point out once more that although the cavalry needs some fine-tuning, it's vastly superior to the MTW cav. Seriously, do you remember what happened when you charged your elite knights into peasants in the old game? Sure, they'd break eventually, but first your knights would hit the Magic Peasant Wall, come to a full stop, and mill about for a while, conteplating the sturdiness of the human frame when faced with a full-on cavalry charge.

Is it perfect? No. But if you need perfection, you'd better stick to math and geometry, 'cause there ain't no such thing in real life. I'll take the outstanding and real over the hypothetical and perfect any day of the week.

I suggest watching movies like El Cid with Charlton Heston or some other historical gore fests if you complain about MTWs presentation and get so excited by that of RTW.

This might indicate that your luckiness will probably not be as long-lived as you would wish.

But hey, I love the game, too. Just come back down to earth, RTW has some real issues in the very core of the game, the tactical battles, that must be dealt with.
