Default Can Captains ever make Generals?

Just wanted to know if captains with battle victories can ever make it to becoming generals/family members?

When you have a daughter come to a suitable age the game randomly picks one of your best captains and asks if you want to adopt him into your family (happens with the romans not sure about any other faction yet)

It's not just dependent on having an eligible daughter. I've had Captains who did especially heroically brought up as potential adoptees. And they're usually better picks than the no-command, no-influence, no-management meatheads that my daughters bring home.

    Those girls have awful taste.

After one of my armies won a couple heroic battle I had 1 unread message (which I didn't read because I though it was just a trait increase) and one new message. The unread one was that the captain had one a heroic battle and could be adopted. The new was, oops too late, he's dead.

If you need some governors/generals, just send Cavalry Units out to hunt lowly peasants. Their incredible kill ratings will usually make them immediately "man of the day" and you will be asked to adopt them.

I agree, my adopted Generals are often better than my own breed... :)

I even made Decius Hortensius my Julii Faction Heir - he is no longer the best, an older "true" Julii is now much better in many regards, but he is young and besides his lack of management, he will soon earn the title "The Mighty" due to commandment and lots of military campaigns. :)

Disaster... I got plague into my capital and every single one of my new family members and adoptees for eleven years ended up with the plague as well. It's a great way to make sure you have no governors!

Had the exact same thing. Even worse: I moved all characters but my faction leader out of the city after 3 years, since it wouldn't go away (like t normally does) and another guy just became of age and got it too. They somehow healed in nature, the city was free of plague, except for my faction leader. Thinking the city safe, I moved the 4 family members back. They promptly were infected and next turn the city was again too. But (now this is funny) the next turn, my faction leader is suddenly FREE of the plague . Also, since 3 men just came of age, they too were affected again, for a whoping 7 infected characters! So I once again moved the generals out, and now even 2 die of the plague before it ends.

Plague in your capital is just silly and stupid.

In order to adopt outside of your family, to gain good traits, do they have to be captians, or just fight in the battle? My heirs are all horrible, no influence and no manegment, but no one has been adpoted in a while. I guess at 70 my king doesn't produce kids anymore. Mabye he needs Viagra....

I've been sending one of my Captains trouncing around all over the country-side beating up rebels, bandits and stray Spaniards but he hasn't had any kind of an increase in command rating.Do i need to reduce the amount of troops with him and have him win an heroic victory or something to get any results?

Same as me Spartiate. I'd like to know how it's even possible to get a Captain with a command rating..?!

It's weird, and I don't know how random it is. You certainly can't get an adoptable Captain without battles, but just having a Captain whacking people in the field doesn't guarantee anything either.

I noticed that when my Scipii were short on heirs, I had two Cap'ns in a row pop up after battles. But later on, when I had more family than I knew what to do with, I couldn't promote a Captain to save my life. I even had a Captain conquer two cities in a row -- no luck.

It's possible that the game is taking into account your heir population, or lack thereof. Or maybe it's just random. Anybody have any evidence one way or another?

After really glorious victories - killing 400 Barbarian Light Mercenaries with two Roman Cavalry units, your odds to get a new family member are really good - I always got a new family member from these battles.

They have to be the captains, not just fight in the battle.
And I agree my Roman daughters had really bad taste in men. NO! not him.. NO! not him. Now my Seleucid 14yr old brought home a 3 star veteran. Who promptly got himself skewered on a Rebel spear.

btw have i mentioned i hate suiciding generals?

What annoys me is when they bring home 60yos. I mean honestly girls, it'd be nice if you were to marry someone who wasn't about to die.

Yea I hate those perverts too, then again my 17 year old son married an 11 year old ....... damm child molester.

Another way to have captains winning battles is if they come in as a reenforcement and the great thing is you can stil command them and will always have the vice "been in the wars" wich is plus 1 command and 1 influence.

And stats for starting generals is almost always poor and I very rarely have generals with more than 2 points in any of the categories, its your job to make them a professional.

The thing is what influence does a 16 year old have on the people and the senate. How many 16 year olds have a good concept of management. Although I'm sure all heirs have a grasp on military knowledge from school but what is school when it comes the real battlefield. I campaign all my generals and it is rare that they die with less than 10 points in managemant/influence/command.

The key is you have to give that 16 year old some lessons. Now that the empire is huge I am having trouble assigning them jobs. I've quite often sent that oddball general to an outpost and then some rebels appear and after his victory he completely changes. If you get all your generals to have 2 or more battles it really stops the bad vices from rolling in and bumps up there skills greatly.

The best way to get the civil war early is to have your faction leader campaigning. Did'ntrealize this at first but I was close to having the people in my favour, but retired my faction leader to the capital and the rating went down. The peole of Rome love winners.
